I have just started on Metformin last week after three yrs of Diet only and three yrs of denial of having type 2 of anything. Is it normal to have very loose stools and a backside on fire for four days. It does say in the side effects you may have it but mine was dreadful I could not go out. THEN on day 5 I was back to normal great. I have also been told to do my testing every other day, it has gone from 11.2 right down to 7. Any answers would be welcome. Am I doing the right thing.

Hi Patriciaian
you have gotten over the worst bit it seems, metformin has that effect on a lot of people from what i have read here, and my own experiences,
when i first started metformin, and each time i have had to up the dosage, its had the same effect on me, I know that i am probably at the limit of what i can take with metformin, ( 2 x 850 per day) and if i take one but then get a delay before eating anything it usually does come back and bite me,
If you have the time and can stand the cost of testing strips then testing will be beneficial, especialy while you are still learning about how to deal with your diabetes,
I used to test often, but now i find i have things under pretty good control, and that my A1c is coming down steadily, i found that even a little increase in exercise makes the best difference !
good luck and keep on checking back here for hints, tips and support from some wonderfull people
best regards

I am in similar position, diet only for 2.5 yrs and GP said my sugars are gradually creeping up. She also warned about loose bowls, well I actually asked about side effects. I have to go to work this coming week then on holiday for a month, not sure I want these problems right now. I asked if could wait until I come back but she seemed to think it is ok to start now. Supposed to take one a day for two weeks then up to 2 a day if symptoms are not too bad, otherwise stay on one until I get back home and see her.

Any opinions on this welcome

GP still advising against self testing, she said it is only necessary when on insulin.

I also felt as you did - kind of indenial, although I have been very good on the sugar free diet, but kind of feeling that I an not really diabetic, going on Metformin has given me the feeling that this is finally admission time, I am a diabetic and this is the next step on the rung of diabetes - guess we all have to do that at some time
