Missing basal

I am taking tresiba at present since lantus caused a lot of low sugars. Its almost 2months since i started tresiba. I usually take it in the evening. Today i could not remember if i took my basal. I think i did not take but i am not sure. I am afraid of taking twice & suffer nocturnal hypos. I checked my BG now before bed, its 160 mg/dl, quite high for me than usual.... Will missing basal a day matters much?? Tresiba has a coverage for 48 hrs, so may be if i take tmrw aftnoon, there wont be any problem i hope.... Looking forward for any replies...

I think it would be best to wait until tomorrow - it's not as if your basal will run out if you forgot today's shot. At worst you might run a little higher than normal. I'm using a NovoPen Echo for my Tresiba so I can tell when I last had it and how much I took.
 
This is not advise, just my own observations. I split my dose; half in the morning and half at night. I frequently forget my evening dose (especially when I fall asleep on the sofa). I practice pretty close control but have never been able to determine any noticeable effect on my sugars thought the day when I have missed my half dose at night.
 
I think the standard advice is not to take a second basal shot, check BG regularly and correct with fast acting insulin as needed.

Debs, you should ask about the NovoPen Echo, this way you can check whether you have taken your basal or not ( the pen has a memory function).

Yes, all the Novo carts fit all the NovoPens, well apart from the original 1.5ml pen and carts of course

Nigel, I persuaded my consultant that I needed Tresiba and he was happy for me to try it as he wasn't paying
 
I wouldn't advocate fasting your insulin but I've gone for 5 days without my Lantus (basal) but still had to take my Novorapid (bolus) without any adverse effects, i've had type 1 for over 3 years now and I still don't understand what the basal insulin is for, it really doesn't make much difference. I always checked if I had any ketones and come up clean every time.
 
@nmr1991 you may be one of the lucky ones but most T1s need basal, and all are prescribed it.

In the old days before long acting insulin, diabetics did as you do, and only used quick acting insulin, but they suffered much greater complications and much shorter life expectancy.

Here in our country, I think tresiba comes only in once use pens. I dont think refillable cartridges are available. I will definitely check it out...

I was initially prescribed only bolus. But then i found my fasting BG to be climbing up till 160mg/dl sometimes even more which stays high till noon & then becomes normal. The fasting levels started getting down only after starting basal insulin. I dont think I had any adverse effects without basal except for the morning highs

So it's only available in pre-filled pens, that's a shame as not only does the NovoPen Echo have a built-in memory function it also dials up in half units.

You can get products that fit on the end of insulin pens that record when you last injected, one is called Timesulin, they are a bit expensive and only last around a year due to the battery (non-replaceable) expiring after this time..
