Hi,
We are looking in to accepting a job offer that would move us from Israel to London. My daughter has Type I and is on an insulin pump (Minimed) and a Sensor (Dexcom) currently they are both fully covered by the national health insurance plan here in Israel. We are concerned about what kind of coverage we will be able to get in the UK and what would be our out of pocket expense. My purposed employer offers additional private health insurance but I don't know what to expect from that for diabetes.
I understand Insulin is covered by NHS. How about BG testing supplies?
Any information on coverage that we can expect both via NHS and private insurance would be most welcome.
Thanks
Joey

Hi Joey, I have no idea how things work for people coming into the UK to work. But can tell you that Sensors have to be paid for out of pocket as does the transmitter.
Pump supplies are prescription only so you need to bring at least 3 months of supplies to the uk as it can take awhile to set up hospital apt and funding for the supplies. All medication and test supplies are covered by the NHS so no problem there (I'm assuming that you will be covered by the NHS). Hope you settle in well.

agree with carbsrok on everything said.

only addition might be to ask if diabetes might be treated as pre-existing condition as regards to private coverage on CGM so not covered or if there is a deductible per year to be paid.

As a T1, BG testing supplies should be covered, but be prepared for friction over monitor types and strip amounts. Having a consultant onside should help sort these out!

I would suggest you contact hospital / GP in area you are moving too. To find out if this pump is used. They could also inform you of what / if items supplied via NHS can be provided . Good luck.
