Moving/Working Abroad

Hi Guys,

There is a possibility of bring offered a job in Europe, in Germany/Switzerland.
I told my boss I would think about it, and it has only just struck me that my Type 1 Diabetes may be an issue (only had it 4 months).

It would most likely be a placement, so moving out there for ~2 years. I have pretty good control, never had any issue with serious hypos/hypers or anything.

Does anyone know if I could still get all my supplies on the NHS? Would it be legal to use my parents address and pick up supplies in 3 monthly pick-ups when I come back to the UK? Do the NHS have deals in the EU with other member states (I am aware Switzerland is not in the EU, but it may as well be...)?

Anyone done anything similar, any advice would be handy...

To be honest I doubt I'll go, but just want to see if it is a possibility or whether it is a complete no-no.

Have a word with Diabetes UK, they have advisers who can help on such matters.

My parents moved to the US when I was 15. so had been diabetic for approx 3 years at the time. My Mum spoke to our GP in the UK and he advised us that as they (my folks) were keeping their house in the UK and would be working on Green Cards that we could still get my presciptions over here! No idea if that was legal (I suspect not!) but it is what we did none the less. I did see a doc over there and had the appropriate health insurance but they didn't supply me with the same insulin and I was too scared/stubborn to try a new one so I stuck with what I had. Times have changed though! and in the EU I'm sure you can find the appropriate help you need and the appropriate meds - in fact, I'm sure your GP can point you in the right direction for that kind of info and your company will no doubt support you with your medical needs
 
It's the dept of works and pensions and HM revenue and customs who deal with these things!
If you are going to work permanently in Germany/Switzterland you may have to join the appropriate scheme in those countries, there are cross border agreements for workers who work in Switzerland/France, I assume the same applies to Germany.
However if it is a temporary placement ( and I don't know how long that applies for) you can continue to pay NI in the UK and get an E101 form which would allow you to join and have the same benefits as someone within the national scheme in Germany. (this may not cover 100% of all health care)

Just read the above post, it isn't legal to live in another EU country on a permanent basis and get prescriptions on the NHS. I live in France and pay into their system, I have to use an EHIC for health care when I'm in the UK even though I still pay UK tax.

You’ve replied to a very old thread. You’ll likely get more responses by starting your own, new thread. Let me or one of the other moderators know if you need help with that.
 
If you are on a placement for the company you work for I'd hope that health cover was included?
If it is included in your UK package then you shouldn't have a problem.
I am guessing that non EU Switzerland may have different rules to Germany so your ultimate location may end up being quite important too.
 
@bulkbiker this is a 9 year old thread that was resurrected from the dead yesterday. I would think the OP has made his decision on going or not and finished the placement years ago if he did go.
