Type 2, cut out all sugars, bread and potatoes to minimum, and no chocolate etc , odd plain biscuit, and all I am being told everything in moderation

They'll drop back, don't worry, but diet is critical and "moderation" is the last piece of advice I'd offer until you see those numbers drop. Then you can branch out a little and see what impact other foods might have.

I did use the word "test" ...... you can't run on 9s without doing something and I doubt serious lows would occur as a result. You need (in my opinion) to correct it and many T2s know (though some might get away with it albeit in small portions) that potatoes and bread are a "no no".
That is why I also said once those numbers come down (and they will) then he can try and experiment by a slow re-introduction
