Hi everyone

I thought i'd say hi as i'm newly diagnosed Type 2 and doing well so far 4/5 months in.

I've been reading a lot tonight about the famous LCHF diet and thought i'd share my own diet and the results.

Well firstly when I was diagnosed my liver count was quite high so i wasn't put on any meds. My HPAIC was over diabetic levels but not by much, so i sympathise with others with higher levels as it was easier for me to manage.

I had usual symptoms but having recently had a lovely baby boy born i had been thinking the tiredness was the broken sleep but wondered how my wife was doing so well! I was falling asleep in the day for naps, starting to get very thirsty and going to the loo more.

Having had some experience with foods and low carbs and so on from weight training and realising i needed to act fast without meds i decided to hit the obvious where it hurts and wipe out the refined sugars. I was a little overweight not much maybe 1.5-2 stones i was 15 stone at 6ft. 4 months on i've lost 1.5stone all by diet - i've been so busy with work i've not been to the Gym in a while.

My Wife is an ex Chef this has been a massive help i can't think her enough. So basically i've just been doing the obvious - checking every single label the part of "of which are sugars". I don't obsess over carb intake though i do watch it. EG i don't have bread every day anymore and Pasta and Rice are not often and when they are they are brown. I've been trying to follow the guidance that the body needs balance. I have a few treats here and there but they are rare, i usually avoid altogether and when i say treats maybe a meal out but i will pick a reasonably sensible dish. I didn't have a massively sweet tooth anyway but used to grab far too often for sweets and chocolate if laying about!

The first thing i noticed was my energy levels have gone through the roof. As i type this my wife has long since fallen asleep. I couldnt keep my eyes open before now i have too much energy and can't sleep before at least 12. But by eating regularly and sensibly i have changed my life very quickly so much so that the Doctor says i don't need Metformin. I'm still learning and have spikes now and then, today oddly reading on my tester around 8 but it has been around 5-6, down from around 8 originally. I know when it's not right as i get minor dizzy spells when i stand and feel tired for about 30minutes, groggy and not quite with it. Not hypo, but like just waking in the morning. My waist dropped very quickly to the point trousers were falling down! I'm down just over a full size from 36 to 34 waist. No belly now! I seem to have got to the furthest i can with diet, once the 1.5stone fell off it stays bang on the 13.5 mark and will not budge but i'll be back at my Gym again soon. My target apparently is 13.

My day starts with cereal- carefully chosen as since found most have too much sugar in-or i have eggs. Mid morning snack usually apple or banana. Lunch home made Casserole of veg and chicken no salt or sugar at all, dinner similar or maybe brown rice, chicken, veg or other. snacking my wife has found a way to make snack bars from oatmeal, raisins and natural peanut butter. I cut out alcohol completely for 3 months due to the liver scare but since finding out thats ok i'm drinking again but not often. Myself and my wife have had3/4 nights out in the past 4 months and i don't usually drink at home anymore, maybe the odd glass of wine.

Looking forward to my next proper blood test and hoping it has dropped a little more. My plan is to reverse this but will always follow a healthy lifestyle now i understand how much Sugar is thrown at us!! I was truly shocked at how much of it is in foods. This site has been very interesting and useful.

Best,
Gary

Well done.
It is working for you - and if your energy levels have improved that much, then it must really suit you.

I am always amazed at how differently all our bodies react - and I am sooo jealous that you can tolerate all those carbs still. So enjoy, and make the most of it!

With the weight loss, and your new awareness you may be able to keep from re-triggering the issues.

Just keep that meter handy, and keep testing, so that you stay on track.

Delighted for you!

Well done, that is excellent. I'm another one jealous you can cope with those carbs.

Good luck with your next HbA1c.
