Perhaps we could help with some diet tips. This will help to lower your blood sugars and once you get control then your nerve damage may improve. Worth a try?
Are you on any medication other than the metformin and insulin?

Hi David,
Your meds are obviously for cholesterol lowering and blood pressure with some pain killers.

Most type 2's have to restrict their carbohydrate intake, potatoes, rice, pasta, cereals and bread. Plenty of vegetables and some fruits and exercise are recommended. It is different for everyone and only regular testing will sort out the culprits. Some you may be able to eat, some you may get away with a smaller portion and some you may have to eliminate altogether. Are you supplied with a meter and test strips?
What sorts of meals are you eating at the moment?

I'm a very new member of the diabetic (diagnosed) community. When I was told by GP I decided it was my responsibility to look at the alternatives. Reached the conclusion that for me I could commit to attacking it head on with diet.
Like you I had EXTREME pain that was destroying my life. It was the pain that took me to the GP in the first place that led to the blood tests that revelaed diabetes.
My choice has been to low carb. My levels do not warrant meds - yet.
So for 2 weeks as of today I've LOW carbed. Already I feel like a totally new person. My moods, crying at nothing, lack of control, anger ..... almost consigned to history.
The pains in feet, fingers are way, way less than 2 weeks ago. Other changes are happening - I'm laughing again, I can think about tomorrow, I'm seeing good things around me.
Co-incidence? - no I don't think so. Carbs/sugar has been my silent enemy. It has been secretly destroying my quality of life to the point where I didn't care what happened next.
For me this has been a total revelation and I can only thank the folks here for laying down all the information and pointers that set me on the road to recovery. THANK YOU ALL!!!!
Looking forward to how much better again I will feel in another 2 weeks.
So think about a low carb try out - echo the sentiments - what have you got to lose?

Those are high BGs not to mention a lot of insulin David, are you sure you're not type-1?
Some people have side-effects on cholesterol lowering drugs, not sure whether pain is associated. However pain is widely reported by patients on Lantus, that could well be the culprit. From my own experience it wasn't much good at reducing my BGs either, and made me feel absolutely exhausted and ill -also commonly reported side-effects of Lantus. Of course your high BGs wont make you feel great either, and your priority should be to reduce those levels. From what you say, it doesn't sound like your current medication/analogue insulin is not doing that for you; that definitely needs addressing.
Just checking but are you on 2100 units of insulin? cos that really is a lot. What are your daily doses?

Hi David, i was suffering from peripheral neuropathy for a few years before being diagnosed with type 2. it started in my feet inbetween my big toes, it felt as though i had toe post sandals on despite being barefoot! the pain got worse and i was walking like an old lady, well hobbling really. my amiltriptyline is now at 75mg each night, this enables me to sleep, previous to this i was unable to sleep for the pains and usually ended up standing in 5/6 inches of cold water straight from cold tap in the bath.
i asked my g.p. for a referral to the PAIN CLINIC at my local hospital, i had an appt in 3 wks and was put on Gabapentin and this was increased gradually (i take 3x300mg daily) i can now walk to the shops and back without almost crying in agony, even small pebbles on the drive made me wince, but not now. specialist told me it would probably return and Gabapentin could be increased if needed. this med is used in treatment for epilepsy usually and i was a bit reluctant to start it but i am glad i did. hope this helps, but i have found out if you dont ask you dont get offered anything. :?

My husband was put on Gabapentin for back pain. He would have sudden collapses and fall to his knees.
What ever you do, do not stop Gabapentin suddenly like he did, you will have serious side effects.
David, sorry no advice, but I do hope you get sorted.
