New and worried

Hello everyone, this is my first post on the forum. I was rushed into hospital last week following a blood and urine test, my blood sugars were 27.8 and there were ketones in the urine. I was diagnosed last friday as having type 1. What is really scaring me is my heart. I had 2 tests done in hospital where they put sticky pads on me, connected them to a machine and took some readings. The first time something was showing up that should not have, the 2nd time they didn't tell me. Today i have had an appointment through to go to the hospital in 2 weeks time for an echocardiogram. It says they will examine my heart using ultrasound. I am terrified there is something wrong with my heart. I wondered if anyone knows if this is purely a routine test that all newly diagnosed have, or if it is just me and there is something wrong. I would really appreciate any information if anyone knows. Thanks.
 
I don't think everyone has it done. I did, I think Ihad every possible test and scan going, probably because I was older, had type 1 and had ignored symptoms for a while.

The examination itself is fine, I actually found it quite interesting as the doctor was explaining what was happening to some students and I was able to follow it.
I can understand your worries, I was lucky I was 'done' whilst still in hospital so didn't know about it until that morning. Try not to focus on it, (easier said than done, I know) it's far better that the docs are proactive, rather than leaving things to chance.
Try to focus on getting your insulin/meals right for now as thats hard enough at first.
 
i think it depends on where u live too as i have heard of a few who have undergone ecg etc, i have had many heart tests although not because of diabetes, as already said ..try not to worry and concentrate on those numbers
 
The ecg test which is the electical test could have shown up the possiblity of a larger sized heart. You would then need an echocardiogram to see if this was correct or not. Most people wouldn't know if they had this or not.

Alternatively you could have a variable heart rate and they want to see if your heart valves are working correctly or not. You would usually notice that your heart beat wasn't regular.

Whatever is wrong (or not!) you need to know. There is effective medication called ACE inhibitors and Sartans which can help enlarged hearts get smaller and work normally. These drugs prevent problems later on and this is why you need to know what is going on.

in our medical practice thjey give all diabetics ecg as routeen. i have had 5 this year because of problems i have had. they have came back fine. you should ask your doctor to explain the results to you so you know what is going on. i hope everything works out for you.

I had a full heart exam about six months after my diagnosis. I was getting occasional pains in my chest region which worried me as my father died at 54 of a heart attack. It was the best thing I ever did - the test (ECG and treadmill test) showed everything was fine, so I stopped worrying. The pains in the chest seemed to be related to neuropathy but they went away after I started low-carbing.

Did the medics say that your pains were due to neuropathy? I had pains in the chest and was ordered to the hospital by my GP for a immediate ECG and other tests. Turns out it was acid reflux! A recent ECG, however, when I had no pain and prior to an operation to remove an eyelid cyst, showed that I had a branch block.
