Hi I know you will have heard this a few times but I have thought of something I believe will help people with Diabetes. I have had type 1 for 22 years so I am familiar with nearly all the items and equiptment but I have come up with an item I dont believe is available.
I have researched it and looked for it online and on the Patent website and nothing. I then went to my 6 monthly appointment an hour earlier to speak to people waiting and ask them, they all said they had never seen this item and thought it would be a really good idea. I even spoke to the nurse and specialist who also thought it was a good idea.
My problem is I have no idea where to start with it, I am not even slightly wealthy so I cant afford a patent lawyer or anything like that.
My question is do any of you know where I can start? Who do I ask or where would I go?
Thank you for reading my query and I appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks.
and ...I understand its not much information
because you've been told ..I am just looking for advice on where to go and what to do.
Perhaps you should get a prototype made and some pictures in an inventors notebook. Not sure many here can help you do any of that without having a clue about what your plan is ... Sorry.dont tell people until you have a prototype made and some pictures in an inventors notebook?? (never even knew that existed)
If you have something that you think is a new invention, then you need to file some form of design rights for it, to prove that you are the originator of the work.
The best place to start is by reading everything on this page and applying for the patent yourself:
https://www.gov.uk/intellectual-property-an-overview/protect-your-intellectual-property
I'd also recommend not asking a Diabetes forum about IP registration and protection. It is more likely to be interested in the product than how you go about protecting it.
The alternative approach, depending on your resources and intentions, is to open source it and publish your ideas and designs freely with some form of commons license, which maintains acceptance that it's your idea but allows anyone and everyone to contribute and reuse.
The choice is yours, but you'd need to consider whether you'd be able to recoup the costs of intellectual property protection in any product you designed and manufactured, or sold to a large company to do the same.
