Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi,
I am newly diagnosed, and not on medication. They are trying diet and exercise for me, however , I bought a monitor so I could monitor my levels, and see if I was doing things right. With the test strips etc being so high, I was asking if I could get them on perscription. The nurse said I didnt need to monitor myself.... Whats the point of telling us we have to change our lifestyles to get it under control, if I dont know if I am doing it right. 6 months checkup? Can I insist I want these on prescription?

Confused and annoyed

Sadly no, you can't insist. Some people buy the SDcodefree meter off Amazon, because it works fine and the strips (the main cost) are far cheaper than any other manufacturer. If you bought a different monitor, it would probably be cheaper in just a week or two to leave it in the cupboard and buy the codefree.
You then need to make the most of your strips by testing at the key time - for me, that's 2 hours after eating so you can see what works for you and what doesn't food wise. If you go over, say, 7.8 at 2 hours, you had too many carbs, so cut down the next time you have the same meal. After a while, you'll have worked out what you can eat and you won't need to test so much - just when you try something new, or now and again to make sure things aren't changing.
Good luck

I Was told today, DON'T test, we will tell you after a Hba1c how you are doing, there is no point aguing I said I test to see what i can and cannot eat,she said we will tell you in 6 months whether you ate the right stuff, also she said you need carbs to give you energy.

Hi Celast.
I wonder how the nurse is going to work out exactly what it was that you ate that was wrong. I have to admit I haven't even asked at the surgery about strips. Bought my own on eBay (Codefree ones). Worth every penny.
We don't have to do exactly as we are told, do we? My doctor told me to send my meter back and go out for a meal on the money. Only for T1 to test for hypos, then she said she didn't know much about diabetes and it was the nurses' specialism.
I have been using my meter for the first time this week and found that my 'low GI' Special K with 'low GI' 'healthy' raspberries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds with skimmed milk sent me up to 8.2 this morning (higher than I want to be).

Apologies, Hi June!
Keep testing. Beg, borrow or steal to get those strips. Thought I might innocently ask my DSN if I get free gym membership, just to wind her up. Have already asked her if I get free pedicures, Answer was 'no'
