hi i am a grandmother (a young one) my 2 year old grandson has just been diagnosed with diabetes and will now be insulin dependent for the rest of his life need chat

Get posting. We will do all we can to help. You got to look at it in a good way. For example being diabetic means you need to eat healthy but type 1 means you can eat junk sometimes as its not 100% diet controlled and it can help people to eat correctly. My diet has defo changed for the better since being diagnosed. It must be a bit hard as your grandson is so young but you will get through Just ask questions here and im sure someone here can answer

The parents on here will be happy to chat with you. Diabetes isn't the end of the world and hopefully you can turn your frown upside down. Keep smiling and you will set a great example to your grandson about keeping positive and together you can learn how to live well with diabetes. You will be a great help to your son/daughter and family if you are able to help out. Maybe just remember that giving a treat to a kid with diabetes needs to be thought out and preferably not sweet/junk food. All other spoiling by the grandparents is just fine .

Im a dad to a 5 month old girl and im so hoping she doesn't get type 1 diabetes from me The nurses tell her it only comes from the mum and if she did get it she would be more like 7 years old. I know the type 1 diabetes only comming from the mum is rubbish

That's funny that they have told you T1 comes from the Mother. All the people I know have either had diabetes come 'out of the blue' or the father's side. You could even check out Steve Renouf (famous T1 league player here) as 4 of his kids have T1 and I also know another Dad (T1) with both of his boys also T1. The only other person in my family I know of with T1 is my father's brother's child (my cousin).

Don't believe 7 is the age either. I see most kids with T1 about the 2.5-3.5 years being common and also the teeenage years.

Yeah I know. Im abit scared but I guess ile just have to do what I can to help. My daughter doesn't live with me :/

They do testing of siblings and family members of T1's here as part of research projects. I've only heard of one person that was identified as the potential to be T1 and put on the nasal spray. He still ended up T1 but maybe delayed the onset.

Hope you get to spend some time with your daughter and you and the ex get on okay even though you are not together.
