Hi everyone,
Where to start...
I'm on the forum on behalf of my 5 year old daughter who was diagnosed with Type 1 in February this year. It's been a steep learning curve for us all, and I don't think we are at the end of that curve yet!!
She had lost LOTS of weight, was constantly thirsty (could down a 1l bottle of water in the middle of the night no problem!) and had started to wet herself, I was constantly running to a toilet with her, pulling her pants down on the way! I had my suspicions, but never really took them seriously but had made a doctors appointment just to be on the safe side. Things came to a head when she got a stomach bug one weekend and got seriously ill, she wouldn't wake up one day. Straight to hospital and immediately diagnosed as type 1 and put on an insulin drip.
Injections were so scary to begin with, more for me than her I think, she's such a wee star. I'm just at the point now where she's had a couple of hypos (one really bad, shaking and disorientated) and also high blood sugars due to having the cold! Just when I thought I was getting a handle on it something else comes along to knock it out of whack! I have an excellent paediatric diabetes team though, they are always on hand to calm me down when I am panicking, or when I have a really stupid question. I have turned from a mother who took things in her stride to a nervous wreck when things start to go wrong!
I know I'm rambling a bit but it's just nice being able to share my daughter's experience with people who know what I have been though.
