Hi All,

I have been a diabetic myself for 18 years and use an insulin pump, my world was turned on its head last week when my 9 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Its frightening to think that the majority of her diabetic care is in my hands, have joined the forum to hopefully pick the brains of other parents and find out how diabetes affects kids. I was a rebellious 16 yr old when diagnosed so the views and issues I had are gonna be completely different to hers.

I have to say she is amazing and is taking it in her stride I am so proud of her.

Hi there,

My son is a fair bit younger than your daughter but there are quite a few Mums here with kids about 9yrs. Must of been sad when your daughter was diagnosed but at least your knowledge puts you at a great advantage. Still lots of trial and error I suppose and kids are always changing and doing different things. Hopefully you will be able to guide your daughter through those teenage years and avoid the whole rebellious stage.

You get pretty 'tuned in' to signs of your child going hypo. Sometimes I can look at Khaleb in the morning and know he's going to be hypo some time that day. Other people don't recognise the signs at all so it is a concern if ever you leave your kids in the care of somebody else.

Look forward to hearing more of your story.
