Hi, I need some advise on which way to go next. I have been on dafe for a long time now doing Lantus on a morning 42 units then novorapid as and when i eat using the carb counting process. I have failed to get use to this and make it apart of my routine. I religiously take me morning lantus everyday but fail to remeber to do my novorapid when i eat. I have had 'denial' issues for years with my injections and have seen specialists and councillers etc but still cannot get the injecting right. some days i do it, some days I dont. i dont know why either.. I want to be able to get my hba1c down and start planning a family etc. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i can do? any 2/3 daily injection regimes that they are on that works for you? Ive tried to talk to my nurse but they want me to stay on Dafe and do not seem to reolise im struggling. HELP! Please x

Hi,

I can see your predicament. I too had issues inn being consistent with taking my insulin and getting back into the habit of regular testing and taking every injection was not easy.

So i looked for something to spur me on and to aim for... an insulin pump. I put reminders on my phone to test BG's and started to inject BEFORE a meal. That way i wouldn't forget. No insulin no food. I slipped up here and there but who doesn't?!

Seems like starting a family is a great incentive for you. for the best interests of yourself and baby, you really should have very good control before you start trying though.

I can see your diabetes team's point wanting you to stay on MDI and follow the DAFNE way, as it really does give you a better chance of consistent control. Many people are successful with 2 a day regime. but in my personal opinion my control was very up and down because you have to eat for your insulin because it's the same controlled dose.

If you really do want to try other insulin regimes then it's your call. Be firm with your diabetes team that you believe it will give you a better shot of good control in order to start a family.

But either way i feel i need to stress how important it is to have good control and stability with your diabetes before you start a family. Let it be your incentive into getting in a good routine of injecting and testing, you may find it quite simple in that sort of mind frame.

Good luck!
