This sounds promising as a potential therapy. Diabetes is a complex disease and given that there are 3 main type of diabetes, namely Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes, all of which include many subsets, finding a common cure is next to impossible. Hence each subset need a specific approach.
Beating beta cell apoptosis (cell death) may be an avenue as a novel therapeutic solution for many types. There are also diabetics where sufficient insulin is produced by the beta cells but are insulin resistant and cause hyperglycaemia.
Nevertheless it is encouraging to note the discovery of this miR-200 that is responsible for beta cell apoptosis. A mechanism to block this miR-200 preventing beta cell apoptosis could be a cure for millions of diabetic patients.
