New to all this a parent needing advice

Hi my daughter has recently received results of a fasting glucose blood test of 22.5. She attended the appointment alone ( she's 18 and my ex husband didn't want to go in with her, but that's another story!) she didn't really take in what the doctor was saying other than she had to make an appointment to see the diabetic nurse at the practice. This appointment is not till a week on Friday. I'm concerned about this, should she wait this long are these results high enough to require an appointment sooner? I'm staying calm on the outside for my daughter's sake but inside I'm freaking out. I think I'm driving her insane already by asking her how she's feeling every five minutes. Some advice to calm down and wait for next weeks appointment would be nice, or do I need to ring the surgery and demand an earlier appointment.

Hi Helen I would go to A+E cut out the middle man and you will be able to access the hospital specialist team. I really wouldn't hang around until next week.

Let me know hoe you get on.

Thanks posted question in wrong place. She's been admitted ketones reached 3.1 but were 0.9 when I left. Had two shots of insulin seeing diabetic nurse tomorrow and clinic booked for Monday thanks for your concern its been a long and stressful day! Finally off to bed! Will update tomorrow

Thanks Kim I did manage to get some sleep.

This morning I feel completely drained and very angry at the appalling treatment (well lack of really) by the GP. I have an A level and a degree in biology acquired 25 years ago and even this gives me enough knowledge to suggest that someone of 18 presenting with BG of 22.5 a raging thirst constant peeing tiredness blurred vision and weight loss has type 1 diabetes and should be treated straight away, not told to not eat sugar and see the nurse! I will be making a formal complaint when I work out who to!

As for Emma she was brilliant yesterday really brave. I just hope we get some good advice today, I think we will the hospital has arranged for someone from the diabetic team to see her this morning and the hospital diabetic clinic is supposed to be very good. The treatment she received in A&E yesterday was excellent.

You're absolutely right, we were trying not to freak you out too much yesterday but the consequences of not taking her to A&E in the morning could have been fairly major. You made the right call coming on here and asking and prevented a potentially dangerous situation!

I have no doubt when you see the diabetes specialist team they will get Enma right on track. She'll feel back to "normal" ( with a few added injection punctures!) in about a week once she recovers from the ketones. Hopefully her stay in hospital will be a short one!

If she has any questions at all that she feels are "too silly" to ask her diabetes team tell her to get on here and we'll help her out! If she doesn't want to post publicly she can private message me or any of the others. If we can't help we'll guide her to the person who can, even if that is her nurse!

I hope you find the right place to complain to!
 
Hi Helen,
So glad you got better care in A&E. When you have a moment go to www.pals.nhs.uk to find your local PALS (patient advice& liaison service). This is where to direct your complaint to. They will take it seriously and inform you of the outcome. Very important to do so as that person obviously needs further training. I did something similar and & PALS were fantastic. The person concerned had to undergo training & I was reassured they were competent to deal with this should it arise again. Sadly Type 1 gets missed, so the more health professionals are trained the better.
