Hello this is the first time I've cone on a forum regarding diabetes,I've had type one for the past 11yrs and recently I've started increasing my insulin dose quite a lot and I'm not really sure why,I've increased my background insulin by about 8 units which is a lot for me.
So I thought it would be quicker coming on a forum to try and find out than phoning the nurse, hope some one can give me some advice
Thanks in advance

Hi Steelcitysurfer and welcome to the forum There are many type 1s on this forum who will be able to help you and they will arrive a bit later this morning.

In the meantime this is the general information given out to new members by the former Monitors and you might find some useful hints in here for you (ignore the mention to newly diagnosed as I saw you were diagnosed 11 years ago):

Welcome,

I'm not sure I know the answer to your question though. the things that come to mind as possible are:
- illness besides diabetes, could there be any other thing like an infection that could be affecting bg?
- has your lifestyle changed at all? when I started working at home instead of commuting, even though I thought there wouldn't be that much different in exercise, there was enough to mean I needed to change my insulin dose quite a bit. Also stressful times can make quite a difference to the amount of insulin you need
- have you put on weight? that might affect your resistance to insulin
- not sure if you are male or female and what age you are but hormone changes can make a lot of difference to insulin requirements

the other things I could think of (but you'd need to get lab tests done to check)
- you maybe were producing a bit of your own insulin still but your pancreas has now packed up completely
- you have become insulin resistant just over time... it is possible I think for type 1s to have insulin resistance as well as type 1.

Obviously the answer is to go to see the nurse/doc, and I am not medically qualified so all of the above is just my personal experience and thoughts, but it may help to have thought about some of those things first. Hope it helped anyway.

Hi Welcome to the forum..

who knows, but the answer is likely to lay within your blood glucose readings, check these and see what patterns they might throw up!
