Just wondering if anyone can help me with 'the rules'
I am just doing low carbs but see lots if stuff about percentage of fat etc in some of the posts I've read so bit confused really

Any help would be appreciated x

Hi the "rules" are simple, eat fewer carbs to get lower blood glucose numbers, also lose weight if you need to, eating fat is healthy, this doesn't mean making lard lollies, it just means avoiding low fat products and enjoying butter, cream, olive oil etc the percentages are not important in my opinion unless you want them to be, I think being technical helps some folks which is fine, just choose a number of carbs to try to hit or beat each day, and replace them with fat/protein, the most common question is how many carbs per day, this is personal and you can experiment to suit yourself but if you want a number..... Try 40g per day see how you go and get ready for great blood numbers

All just my opinion!

Hi,

I think the best advice is to take the fat part slowly.
Don't fall head first into a bucket of butter.

We have been conditioned, for decades, to go low fat. And to think that fat is somewhere between the devil incarnate and a stab in the heart. That kind of conditioning takes a while to overcome.

So, I would cut your carbs. To whatever level you feel is appropriate.
And up your fat. A bit.
Eat normal quantities of protein foods.
Fill up on non-root veg. A few berries. Full fat yog...

And see how you feel.

Still hungry? Then add some butter to your veg, or cream to your coffee. Or have a cheese snack...

Feel it's all too rich? No worries. Dial back on the fat a bit, wait a few days and nudge it back up. You will be surprised how quickly the body adjusts. And gets to love your new way of eating.

Still craving carbs? No biggie. Just cut the carbs further, and up the butter, cheese, oil and cream. The cravings will fade. Keep dropping carbs til they disappear.

That's the way I do it.

But you can go the high tech MyFitnessPal, x grams protein and x grams fat route. That's more work, and i can't be bothered. But it was interesting to try for a while. And some people love the precision.
There's a nutritional calculator on the www.bloodsugar101.com website, if you want to calc your ideal numbers.

Something else you might consider:

On a very low carb diet your body will mainly be burning fat, and this can come from your food, or from your body fat, or both. If you need to lose weight you may need to eat a bit less fat than if you are aiming to maintain your weight, so that you can use up some of the fat stored in your body's "larder".
