New to low carbs..tried & failed! Help!

Yeah I know Robert, I think there's just you and one other person on the forum who is using Tresiba, I'd imagine most HCP's will be reluctant to prescribe it due to the costs, but there's still no harm in asking.
 
I didn't realise Tresiba costs more. Figures I suppose. So probably doctors will only prescribe it as a last resort.
 
Just had a hypo...feel dreadful. Had a bottle of lucozade in my panic as was walking around asda with my three year old who was havimg a tantrum. When I checked levels were 5.1 but I was shaking so much and my heart rate was through the roof. Had a kinder egg chocolate & a chocolate coin as that was in my bag. Ruined the day now!

Don't quote me Spiker, but I believe it's around 25-35% more expensive than lantus & levemir.
 


Wonder if your hypo symptoms were somewhat delayed and your liver had compensated for your falling bg levels, hope your day improves from here-on Icarter.
 
@lcarter that is awful, poor you, particularly with 3 year old in tow.

Do eat a good proper meal as soon as you can.
 
My som has autism and can be very difficult at times..especially with my diabetes playing havoc. Bgs this am were 11.2 upon waking. I took 4 units immediately. I had an eat natural cereal bar 14g carbs and didnt take any insulin as was rushing. Checked them two hours later and they were 12. I took a further 4 units. Silly mistake! Then 1.5 hours later that happened.

Am not eating cauliflower cheese from last night. Levels are 18....because of sugar. Have taken 6 units and im going to rest before the school run at 3 for my eldest...
 
You did the right thing by acting on your symptoms and not going on the meter. Meters can read high and also slightly lag behind your core blood glucose level, particularly if it is rising or falling very quickly. Good for you. Always safety first, particularly with a child in your care. The lucozade was a good idea as it's usually much faster than chocolate. Chocolate contains fat which slows down absorption. Glucose liquids are usually best, or glucose tablets and water.

Understandably difficult for you. I do think you need to do some basal fasting checks just to get your basal right before looking at your meal-time insulin, don't forget you can usually contact a DSN just by ringing the diabetes clinic and asking to speak with them, if they are not available they should return your call when their schedule allows.

Sometimes with the best will in the world we do need a professional input when it comes to managing bg levels, give them a ring and give them a detailed account of your levels over the last few weeks, they may just be able to help you or recommend alternative insulins to try.

I'm worried that 6u sounds like a normal correction dose for you for an 18mmol/L high. It's not a good idea to give normal correction doses for high BG immediately after a hypo. Please have something extra to eat, with less insulin than normal - half or none. Otherwise you may get a "rebound hypo".
 
In the big picture, it's good that there is a clear explanation for the hypo - you basically 'stacked' two correction doses. So in the big picture all you need to figure out is how to fix those overnight-to-morning highs. I think splitting your Lantus 16/16 at (roughly) 9am and 9pm should help with that. But talking to your DSN is a great idea. They really are there to help.
 
Ha Spiker you need to be a DSN. just spoke to mine and she saod to stop correcting unless with food, also to split my doses 16/16. She thinks I may need more lantus but to let the split take its toll, write down all levels over the weekend.
