I was diagnosed with diabetes a week ago and still trying to work out what I should be doing.

Our diabetes clinic at the doctors are very good, they even gave me a glucose monitor straight away. Got to go again next week. Not sure what readings should be, how often I should do them, whether they should be higher or lower in the morning than the rest of the day (mine seem to be higher). I am not on medication but want to try and control by diet. This is also confusing. Should I be doing an Atkins style diet or not?

Any help will be appreciated. Will try and get on the forum again later but got to go to work now and wont be home til about 6.30 so will pop on at some time.

Hi googlegoss and welcome to the forum Here is some information which will help you to look after yourself. You are lucky to have received some testing equipment. There is also some information on diet here. A strict Atkins diet is not necessary - most people choose slightly more flexible diets. The most important thing is to cut down on carbohydrates. By testing you will be able to see which foods are best for you (see below) as everyone is different. Ask as many questions as you need as there is usually someone here who will know the answer.

Thanks for the info Daisy. My clinic has also given me a prescription for more testing strips and the needle things as well.

They are also referring me to a course called X-PERT which is run over a period of six weeks, a few hours a week. They also said I will be getting an appointment through for my eye test thingy as well. They have been very good.

Unfortunately the person who made my appointment at the doctors should have made it an extended one but didnt so she couldnt cover everything but will write down any questions that come to mind and ask them next week.

Will be reading a lot of stuff on this site to get more insight.

Looking forward to getting to know you all

Sue
