Hi from another Aussie.

Many of the posters here have found great success with both weight loss and BG control by following the diet doctor: http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

I've been maintaining my weight loss very easily for 2 years now following a real food, low carb diet. I can honestly say I feel better now than I've done for most of my adult life. The other bonus of the diet is mood control - now that I'm off the BG roller coaster, I find myself much calmer and less easily upset or depressed. I wouldn't go back to the way I was prior to diagnosis for quids.

At my age and with hip problems, I can't do a lot of exercise - but walking daily has made a big difference. I find getting out in the fresh air and nature is also a great mood stabiliser.

Welcome to the forum

(You won't find too many people around at this time of day as most posters are from the UK.)

Many thanks - do you really stick to no bread or any wheat products and no potatoes? I think that is so wonderful and brave of you, I wish I could do it. I am the same age and am ashamed that my weight goes up and down, and just when I get to seeing it go down, something stops me and I just go back to eating the naughty foods again.

I will have to rethink my eating habits, I certainly need some heavy motivation or a kick up the backside, honestly.

cheers
Maggie

I was cured of a laundry list of ailments by going wheat/grain & processed food free - IBS/reflux, hypertension, hypothyroid, depression. Feeling so much better is my motivation for not backsliding. Whenever I eat wheat, I bloat up like I'm 9 months pregnant which is not a good look at my age, lol.

I guess my challenge to you would be to try a real food, LCHF diet for 30 days - then if you don't feel much better you can always go back to eating junk food.

Another site that I found really helpful in the early days was Blood Sugar 101 - read the page about how keeping under 7.8 will minimise most complications - it certainly convinced me: http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.php - http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045621.php

that is so very hepful - thank you i suffer with ibs, refux, ulcer, lactose intolerance, plus depression as well as the bloating, wind and diarreah which most days i cant get out and about because of

i was told i need to see a dietician but its so expensive

Hi from another Aussie there's a lot of us Australians who participate here...
This forum will be a big help. I learned a lot of things from this forum like monitoring sugars and it's good that you also learn from people who are managing their diabetes well. Its nice to read success stories too and keep track on the stuff they do to be healthy. You're not alone, welcome aboard Maggie x

Are you on any medication for your medical issues, Maggie?

I found that I could stop taking my PPI (acid suppressing drug) after a very short time on the LCHF diet - a lot of people here have had the same experience.

Metformin can have GI side effects for some people too.

Hi Maggiee,
@Indy51 has given you brilliant advice. Please, please go on to the website she suggests. Another member recommended it to me and it's a lifesaver! I loved bread, pasta and rice. Give them up for a month then retry them. You will be so surprised. I did. If you eat just fish, meat, eggs, cheese, loads of greens, salads, butter (I cook with garlic butter) cream, nuts and small amounts of berries the weight for most of us slides off. I tried rice after about 2 months as I was desperate for a curry and I realised it tasted of nothing. It was great as I realised I didn't miss it! It also sent my bs into double figures so I now don't bother. Same deal with pasta. At first you think well what do I eat instead of bread? Lunch for me consists of little bits and pieces. Cucumber, cherry toms, olives, cubes of cheese - all those things you used to pinch bits of from the fridge. I have swapped out crisps for salted peanuts but only have a small handful. cease that's all I want. I knocked the booze on the head (miss this if truthful) for the first 3 months and now have 2 glasses at the weekend. Every now and then I miss bread and have the occasional small piece. Milk choccie has been swapped out for a couple of squares of at least 70% dark. I have a low carb dessert twice a week. I have lost 2 stone 11lbs since 28th of Jan. Try this diet! Join us! You have nothing to lose apart from weight and watch your bs go down! My hba1c was 79 in Jan. It is now 38 which is non diabetic!
I hate exercise. I found a shop half an hours walk away and I go there most evenings for milk, or a cucumber, or tomatoes. And I put my music on. This way, I'm not exercising, I'm simply popping to the shop!
Oh, and my acid indigestion- gone!
Good luck and keep us posted!

my goodness you are all fantastic - thank you yes i take meds for depression and bipolar and anxiety as well as diaform

thanks scandichic for the advice as well - i have just read a few 5% stories on that forum

walking is limited because of the digestive 'problems' but i suppose if i eat less it ay improve

maggie

Definitely. Don't think I really did any exercise for first couple of months but then I felt like doing some! Big hug!

thanks, I will ask my Doctor, he didn't really seem interested when I asked him last.

The problem is that most dietitians will probably tell you to eat starchy carbs with every meal, so I don't think not seeing one is any great loss. Maybe your GP already knows they'll push the party line diet on you.

Are you on the extended release metformin? That can sometimes help reduce GI issues for people.

don't know what that means Indy51 - I am on one tablet daily 850g since I was diagnosed a few years ago. I have made a commitment to myself today that I will hold off on the bread and all wheat products, and pasta as well as the sugar - for the moment. I am quite limited as I can't have dairy - although I do have a bit of lactose free milk with my tea/coffee and the occasional lactose free yoghurt but that has a bit of sugar in it. Can't be helped, I will try the tomato, cucumber, bit of hard yellow cheese is OK and perhaps a piece of fruit for lunch?

My biggest problem of late in this cold Melbourne weather is I just love hot buttered toast for breakfast, as I don't like cereal and I can certainly do without breakfast - what do you think about my idea?

Your dr should have sent you to see a pediatrist for your feet
Got your eyes checked by specialist
Dietitian and a course

He has been paid a special payment to arrange all this stuff for you to be done as required
Has he joined you to ndss

Welcome maggie.
I am type 2 and I also find my weight hard to control. Though on initial diagnosis I lost 3 stone (19 Kilograms) just by changing my diet. I managed to keep that off for a little while however that changed and old habits crept back. I am still 2 stone lighter than I was but really need to be lighter. I do have trouble with exercise as I have Osteoarthritis in a few joints which makes exercise painful.
Keeping carbs to a minimum, like no bread does help enormously. Pototoes can be ok as long as you use NO butter or Gravy on them. Keep fats to a minimum and supplement with pieces of fruit during the day to keep the hunger pains away. Little and often seems to be the way for us type 2’s.

thanks Jack.

I get my feet and eyes checked yearly
but I asked him about a dietician and he wasn't very fussed, said 'what for'
I am also under a gastroenterologist for the ulcer and hernia
as well as a psychiatrist for the 'other' problems,
Apart from all these, I am well!!

Quitting bread and sugar is hard, would kill for a freddo bar ATM but haven't had choccies since doing the low carb.... bread tends to raise sugars too...so you might want to limit it gradually/wean off carbs....or have a treat once in a while...
