New to this site. need help

Type of diabetes

Hi I just signed up. I am a type 2 diabetic, diagnosed 1998. I am allergic to the preservatives in insulin so my body has been abused and am now experiencing the bad side effects of diabetis. I understand that I have to post 3 times before asking questions is that correct?

lol. I guess that was a question.lol. I just reread the pop up and I realize it was referring to posting links not posts. I'm not too computor savy. Ok here's my question. I saw a post from 2012 by a vixonangelica and a happylegs73 who have the same problem as me. Allergies to preservatives in insulin. I want to contact them to see what they are using now. Others posted on their site of a couple insulins that dont have m.creasol in them but they are in the United Kingdom and I cant get access to them in Canada. I am loosing hope as I am getting injections in my eyeballs for blindness every 3 weeks and have been in hospital Feb 2-11 for 9 days, just about died twice, from lactic acidosis of 5 and ketoacidosis that was off the chart. They couldn't give me insulin in the iv. I have been back to emerg twice since then with ketoacidosis and chest pains. I now will be getting weekly iv's to rehydrate me as my sugars go up to 26. I am on 4 oral meds. I can take slow acting NPH but only 14 units but also taking prescription benydryl with it but I cant go higher or I have anaphalectic reaction. I desperately need a fast acting insulin. Yesterday I found out my eyes are getting worse. I am eating next to nothing mainly protein many times a day so am hungry all the time. So this is my sob story does anyone know of anyone who has found a venue to get these two insulins in Canada: Hypurin Bovine Lente or Hypurin Bovine Protamine Zinc Insulin made by Wockhardt. They dont have m.creasol.

Just repeating my speculation on another thread about this new limit:

I think it's an attempt to stop spam. If they don't have a posting limit before people can post links to other internet sites, then the forum can get infected with viruses etc. I was just thanking my lucky stars a couple of days ago that the influx of posts about illegal passports and other nonsense seems to have finally stopped.

I also think they are especially wary of new members starting a whole lot of new topics - it's a red flag that some "flooding" spam activity may be about to start.

I think there may also be a threshold of posts before new members can send private messages to existing members.

Maybe @Administrator or one of the moderators could clarify for us?
 
Hi there. I am not sure what province you are in, I am in BC. Have you spoken to your endo about having insulin imported from the UK or the states if it is available from there. The powers that be might just make accommodation for this as it is clearly a matter of life or death with this allergy. Your endo may be able to intervene on your behalf with your provincial health authority. If he can't he or she may know who you can contact. You could also contact the manufacturer directly for information. Good luck.
 
Hi: Thanks for your input. I am in BC too. I have been to two endo's and both said they couldn't help me. I am seeing a 3rd on the 29th. I have been on the phone all day trying to contact pharmacies in the u.s. but so far they all have only insulin with creasol. The insulin I need is in India and cant be shipped to us. I'm hoping this 3rd endo will do the research I need done and have way to get it.

Hi and welcome.

Just a suggestion: you could try contacting the manufacturers of the insulin directly, and asking what their distribution routes are.

I have no idea of the processes involved, the legalities and so on, but they should be able to provide some information which may help you.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 147,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:
  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

Thanks Brunneria. Yes I have been on the phone calling manufacturers the last couple days. So far all insulins have m.creasol except for an animal insulin in the United Kingdom. Tomorrow I am calling them to find out if humans can use it as I know have a way to get it to Canada. Thanks.
 
Thanks Freema. After a few days of just bad news after bad news its nice to come on here and get well wishes. I am now going to be getting a pick in my arm to receive 2 bags of fluid by iv twice a week as the keytones are so high. Thanks for informing daisy1 to send the information.
