Hello, just been diagnosed type 2 having being borderline for a few years. Advised diet alone at present. See Nurse in couple of weeks, GP sending me on DESMOND, and advised to get special eye test.
Just concerned about diet as I do not eat wheat - not coeliac but have had exzema and wheat made it worse. So I already watch what I eat!
I exercise regularly as walk the dog at least twice a day.
Also have taken thyroxine for about 18 yrs due to underactive thyroid.

Welcome to the Forum jmd.

It is very confusing when you first get diagnosed and we hope we can help you.

Here is the basic advice we give to new diabetics which may help you work out your diet.

I like chocolate and have been given a big box for Christmas! How do I go on about that?
As being new to diabetes I feel a bit confused about what "sweet" stuff you can have.

Just have one a day or maybe one after each meal, and savour every second it lasts if you have the willpower That way the pleasure will last for days. It would be a shame not to have and enjoy them although chocolates should generally be avoided. That's what I would do anyway.

Hello and welcome jmd!

I'm afraid the chocolate will raise your blood glucose and may be best avoided for now until you have got your diabetes under control, after this time you may be able to experiment and have the odd chocolate as a occasional treat!

As an afterthought, tell all your friends and relations you can't eat chocolate so you don't get any more

oh dear, hope that nibbling on nuts and raisins is a good safe alternative!
At least any guest can be offered chocs happily.

I feel the same about chocs but actually found that I really enjoyed the 3 I've had (1 a week!) as they taste so different, much stronger, more bitter (dark chocolate) and yes the flavour to savour is great.

saving for guests? ... NO .... enjoy as a real treat!

don't forget you can get sugar free chocolate, I like Thornton's when someone buys it for me!

Is it not safe to have even 1 little chocolate a day then? Not even a small one?

I didnt think it would be too bad. Not that I eat any, but just wondered.

Im not sure I like being diabetic anymore, Id like to make a complaint, anyone know who it should be addressed to?
