Hi Everyone,
I have just joined your forum to gain more information,I became diabetic about a year ago after 5 months in hospital
with Pancreatitis ( about 70% to 80% damaged to the pancreas) due to blocked gallstones in the gallbaddler.
I am not sure if that is type1 or type 2 as this is sometimes called type 3 or secondary.
I try my best to manage my diabetes but it a daily routine is not aways easy to follow.
My insulin type is NovoMix 30 before breakfast between 10 and 12 units and before a evening meal 4 or 5 units.
Is my insulin amount a good indicator of my diabetes.
Also is there a prefered section on the forum I should use to ask questions.
Many thanks
Ray

Hi Ray and welcome to the forum An insulin user will be along soon to answer your question about insulin amounts as I don't use insulin. If you want to ask a question, try and choose the forum (from the Board Index page) which fits the subject of your question the best. If in doubt there is an Ask a Question forum. Here is some information we give to new members and I hope this will be helpful to you. Ask as many questions as you like as there is usually someone who can answer them.

Good Afternoon Ray.. I believe it is normally treated as type I because typically your beta cell function is reduced to a point where you would require insulin to survive.

Reference the amount of insulin you are injecting its hard to be objective because we don't have all the information. Amount of insulin you require is determined by body mass and the amount of carbohydrate that you are eating in each meal. In general a ratio of 0.55 units / KG is used as a starting point although this wont be accurate if you eat less than the normal volume of carbohydrates or retain more pancreas function than average.

I am not sure what 'average' pancreas function is for a type I.. I had always assumed that it was close to 0% after some years of diagnoses.. I will have to now go and investigate!
