Hello,

I'm Russell, a recently diagnosed Type 1. From glancing around the forum I'm quite surprised that the low-carb diet thing seems to be still fairly widespread. When I was diagnosed, in Sweden last year, I started cutting down on carbs - even at one stage cutting them out completely. By the end of the year I was experiencing cravings for food like you wouldn't believe. At the turn of this year, once I'd returned to the UK, I started carb counting, eating what I liked (within reason) and having a proportionate dose of insulin. Things, if not amazing, are certainly much better.

As well as being diabetic I'm also a journalist. At the moment I'm writing a story on students with diabetes. Any students out there who would like to share their experiences of diabetes, I'd really like to hear from you.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Russ

Hi Russ and welcome to the forum Maybe you should not cut down so strictly on carbs. They do after all help reduce, and treat, hypos in insulin users. It is still a good idea to count them so you can calculate your dosages. And I would not advise cutting them out completely. I am saying this as a non insulin user so bear with me if I am not quite accurate. Read this information which we give to new members and perhaps you will find it helpful and ask any questions you need to as there will be some T1s who will come along soon.

Welcome aboard i am Martina from British Columbia Canada, i am a type 2 diabetic since July 2005, and i am on Lantus insulin. need anything please feel free to pm me on here

Hello Russ

Your post made me smile. As a non insulin injecting Type 2 who doesn't want to do the high carb, lots of drugs way of control or go on insulin yet I actually follow a lot of the Swedish low to moderate carb recommendations which puts me into real conflict with my diabetic nurse at the surgery etc. It certainly works for me as I now have excellent blood glucose control and just need a bit of Metformin to help. The other bonus is I've lost loads of weight. For a diabetic on insulin its a different matter and I agree so long as you are at a healthy weight and have reduced the high risks of heart attacks and strokes associated with overweight diabetic insulin users then eat as many carbs as you want!
