Hi all,

Got a bit of a shock at Christmas with T2D diagnosis. I'm 54 & went for routine bloods for something else and the nurse suggested that I have a HbA1c. No real reason for it other than she thought it would be a good idea to have an MOT. No symptoms, fit & healthy & keep relatively active. Unfortunately, the results came back at 56. The diabetic nurse got in touch, measured me up, took BP etc. She then offered meds for blood pressure & statins whilst cholesterol & BP were fine. I declined the meds on that basis which appeared to **** her off for some reason & essentially kicked me out & told to come back in 3 months. She mentioned that a dietician would be in touch - Still waiting. I decided to get xmas & new year out of the way before taking any drastic action and I started reducing carb intake a couple of weeks ago cutting out the main culprits, spuds, rice, bread & pasta. I have since purchased a meter to test if anything I was eating spiked glucose levels. Nothing up to now has had any negative effect that I can tell. Below are some results over the past 5 days since I got the meter.

Day 1.
3.3 before evening meal (low?) 5.5 2 hours after meal & 5.5 again before bed

Day 2.
5.4 fasting, 6.0 after b/fast (2 hours) Forgot to check before lunch but it was 4.6 after lunch. 5.4 before dinner & 5.2 after dinner

Day 3.
5.8 fasting, 6.1 after b/fast. Missed lunch. 5.5 before dinner & 5.6 after dinner & 5.5 before bed.

Day 4.
5.0 fasting 5.5 after brunch 4.7 before dinner & 5.3 after dinner. In the evening, I had 8 bottles of beer & a few vodkas with zero sugar lemonade. Checked blood before bed and it was 6.1. I though that there would be a definite spike but doesn't appear to be the case.

Day 5.
5.3 fasting 5,8 after brunch. 4.7 before dinner & 5.2 after dinner

I've not made any drastic changes to my lifestyle other than reducing carbs. Would these levels be normal after 2 weeks?

Thanks
OTR

HbA1c 48 and over is diabetic - I would go back in 3 months and see what your score is then and I would imagine it will have came down quite a bit from 56 with the numbers your are getting. Good luck and take care

Thanks Mrs T. I just thought that my numbers were extremely good in just over 1 week after reducing carbs. Particularly days 4 & 5 after alcohol. Not to complain however, I'll take those figures every day of the week.
