Hi everyone

My name is Kielee (Kylie) I have been feeling ill for a few weeks and had some blood tests done friday then was told monday night by my doctor i was type one and needed to go to the hospital the following morning, so i went yesterday and my doctor was wrong its type 2 which is better but im angry that my doctor got it wrong and scared the hell out of me, i had alot of blood tests yesterday and an ABG which i can say is the most painful thing i have ever had as he could get not blood to come out. Iv have been sent home with Metformin which has made me ill by way of a bad tummy, is this normal?

I am so confused because i cant see anyone until 4th Nov to discuss my diet so im really stuck with what i can eat and not eat, i know i need to avoid carbs but what does that leave me with, my partner is being great but hes as clueless as i am, please help.

Thank you x

hya and welcome,
i can understand how you are feeling, its a shock at first, metformin can give u an upset tummy but often passes, have a good look around the forum and ask as many questions as u need to, we have a type 2 part of the forum that u may find interesting

Hi kielee,

I am new to type 2 (9 months) I understand how you feel at this moment I was feeling the way you are I thought my life had ended there and then but with a little work you can help yourself with this condition I am D/E controlled no medication as yet. hope you feel better soon. What are your BG levels at I have taken mine down from 7.2 -6.5 which was my result yesterday.

by the way I had no symptoms of Diabetes it was only found through routine blood test.

Take care

Hi there

They were 19 on a fast test then 26 when i got to the hospital yesterday morning then this morning 13.4, im so confused as to how it changes so quickly, im not doing food shopping until friday so a bit limited on what i have in so not sure that to eat for the next for days x

If you take your metformin during a meal it may help. If I take mine even a short while before food I get problems.

As to eating read, the guide to the newly diagnosed that the monitors post, it is very helpful.

Your BG levels will change as you or havent eaten for a while, what you have eaten and depending when your medication is taken and is working.

It is al SO confusing at the start, but don't worry over time you will get to grips with it and what suits you. the most important thing is to use your meter to check how individual foods affect your body. We are all different and there is no one size fits all solution, as in the perfect menu for diabetics.

hang on in there xx

Hi Kielee

I am fairly newly diagnosed and I know how confusing it all is at the beginning. You feel very vulnerable and as though you've been left to fend for yourself but rest assured you have come to the right place for advice. I've got by BG down from 20 to high 5's low 6's in just over 2 weeks following low/no carbs and am now starting to experiment with certain foods to see what readings I get.

Have a good read through the forum and ask any questions you may have .. someone will always answer.

Hi Kielee

Im pretty new to all this too.

It is scarey and confusing and frustrating etc etc but trust me you will get there, you will pick up bits and bobs of info on this site and it will all come together in your head soon enough so dont worry. Just ask any questions that pop into your head and soon enough you will learn how to take care of yourself.

With regards to the Metformin, I suffered with my stomach too and I was put onto Slow Release Metformin which is a lot better. If you continue to suffer then do speak to your doctor and ask for these.

Thank you so much im so pleased im not alone in this, feeling pretty low and ill tbh, i have lost 13lb in 2 weeks which is great because i have to loose alot of weight but my worry is it will go back on when the medication stables out, anyone have a clue on this?

xx

if u keep eating healthily and taking some exercise then the weight should stay off

Hi bikerbaby and a warm welcome to the forum.
We all understand what you mean when you say that you are feeling low about your diagnosis and it does take a while to get your head around it. The good thing about using the forum is that we are all in the same boat. Diagnosis is almost a bereavement process as you are saying goodbye to your previous lifestyle and have to get to grips with this new way of of healthy eating that does not impact on a rise in your blood sugars. Couple this with exercise, drink plenty of water and you will be well on your way to controlling this condition. It will become a way of life and you will learn to embrace it as the way forward.

There is a good sticky thread in Greetings and Introductions titled "Basic Information for the Newly Diagnosed Diabetic". Have a read through this as it will really be of help to you.

Ask any questions as we all have to learn, nothing considered silly. Look forward to your postings.

Catherine.
