Hi to all my son who,is 15 was diagnosed last week, we have had a steep learning curve but all seem to have accepted that it is now part our our lives. Totally confised about what he should and shouldn't be eating and wonder if its normal for his meter readinfgs to be all over the place at present and if they settle down. We are going on a carb counting course soon, what are peoples views. I have seen a few posts about limiting carbs but really not sure if we are too new at the moment. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Sorry about lads diagnosis but pleased that he has accepted it after only a week. It will take time for his HCP's to work out his insulin doses to stabilise his bg so do hold tight, things will improve.

The carb counting course will help your son immensely and he will be able to ask as many questions as he wants on the course the limiting carbs advice is mainly aimed at type 2's but some type 1's also adopt this approach and either eat them in lowish quantities or eat them in moderation (much like myself), once your lad has his diabetes under control he can then decide which diet best works for him.

Thank you I am panicking that I am not feeding him enough or too much. Am I right in saying he won't be and I shouldn't be expecting him to be in the normal ranges just yet

With some people it can all fall into place within days and with others it can take weeks, months and even years, any questions just get on the phone to his diabetes clinic and ask to speak with a DSN, they are very good and will return your call if they are unavailable.

This is a tough time for the family and as you know the sooner he gets a grip on it the better.
There is an online course that you and your son can do
http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/

And workbooks your son can practice with. Obviously don't change dose without the nurse
