Hi I was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after glucose test of 30 at doctors and was admitted to hospital for further tests and diagnosis. I had to have the glucose flushed from my system on fluids and then had insulin lantus 10 units and novo rapid 4 units. Throughout my stay levels fluctuated with 8 being my lowest and then between 11.4 to 22.4. I have been released and woke up in the night and felt a bit shaky and was sweating. I checked my level and it was 6.4 I had a few glasses of fruit juice and biscuits and I felt better. However when I woke up my reading before breakfast was 11.4 and after two wheatabix with milk and a satsumer rose to 22.4 few hours later. I think the symptoms happened as I followed advice to cut out carbs and sugar and is due to lack of carbohydrate and sugar I consumed this was why I felt shakey. I am also concerned if I need to cut back on these foods as i am slim then it would make me lose weight which is not good as I am only 10 stone. I have an appt with nurse next week but feel overwhelmed as did not receive any advice on this. I have 3 days to my appt so am panicking a bit. Any advice or thoughts?

Hello and welcome to the forum. As I am T2 and not on insulin I'm afraid I can't give any advice except to say you should mention the carb counting course at your appointment coming up.

It will not be long before the members who have T1D will come in to advise you, while you are waiting have a meander around the Type 1 section of the forum. Best of luck.

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear of your type I diagnosis, there's a lot to take on board. There will be others on this forum who will be better qualified to talk about type I I'm sure they'll comment later.
However, the fact that your BG rose to 22.4 is because you have consumed carbohydrates, not because you're lacking them. I don't know what your insulin regime is and am not qualified to comment. I am sure though that lacking carbohydrate isn't causing an increase in BG.

I have a niece and a nephew that is type1. I personally have no real experience about type1 diabetics, except i feel it would be really hard, but quite manageable and as one poster said' there are a lot of type1's in this forum that can help you".but am wishing you well and Welcome.
 
Have you been given insulin for use at home?
The 6.4 would have been a false hypo. You would have been fine to leave that. By adding fruit juice etc you pushed levels up again.
What advice have you been given so far?
 
I am aware of the level of 4 for hypos. My body felt shakey and I was hot and sweaty and as my readings in past have been fluctuating from 6.4 to 26 panicked as i was sweating and feeling shakey it felt like i was having one and thought I'd better have something to feel better. I understand when you consume carbs it can raise glucose level and that food group is not good. I'm just concerned if I cut down on that food group as I way only 10 stone that it would cause me to lose weight. I had hardly any carbs in the day because I was told to cut down and as I did follow the advice was wondering if that might have been the reason. Hope I am making sense. I still need to see a dietician but just wanted to know other peoples experiences. Thanks. I do use insulin at home lantus 10 units and eco rapid 4 units before meals.

Can you check for ketones as 26 is high.
As you are new you will probably not have yet been taught to adjust doses, that will come in time.
For now stick to what the medics said, but if your sugars stay high or you have high ketones call 111.
You are most likely slim due to the diabetes, weight will recover once sugars are controlled.
 
Type 1s do not have to low carb. However many find that they have improved control over sugars with lower carbs.
 
Hi Tim. I was diagnosed last
year. It's a steep learning curve but you'll get there.

It sounds like you've been put on fixed doses of insulin to start with. Are you taking 4 units of novorapid with every meal? They may have told you to cut down on carbs so you are having enough that 4 units of insulin can deal with them. Once you have seen the dietician and they have taught you how to measure your insulin dosage for each meal then in theory you can eat what you want. Never works quite like that in practice, but I eat chips, rice, pizza and chocolate without a problem.

If you start to feel.shaky then don't overdo the sugars, especially if you're above 4 when you test your blood. You will crave sugar, so the best thing is to have just a couple of jelly babies or 1/2 glass of juice then measure again in 10 mins.
