Hello, I hope someone can help me.
I am new to this so please be patient.
I am looking for a simple list of basic foodstuffs which are either 'good' or 'bad', and if bad, is there an alternative?
For instance, I can't find out if honey is a safe substitute for sugar.
Many thanks, Rubik

Hi Rubik and welcome to the forum.
I see you are Type-2 and diet controlled. Its a good start for you to be looking at what food types are good for you and which are bad. If you have read some of the postings on the forum you will have realised that ther most commonly appearing topic and public-enemy No.1 for a diabetic is carboyhdrate. If you want to control your diabetes with diet then the only way you can do that is to reduce the amount of carbs that you eat.

So not just sugar but all sources of carbs, particularly potatoes, bread, cereals, pasta and rice. That doesn't mean don't eat them but be aware of the effect they have on your blood sugar and try cutting down to see what effect it has when you test your blood sugar levels.

To answer your specific question about honey Vs sugar, Honey is 5.8g carb per teaspoon, sugar is 5g per teaspoon, so honey is marginally worse for a diabetic than sugar. Try one of the artificial sweeteners instead. Splenda is regarded as the safest of the 'artificials' and comes in both tablet and powder form, can be used as a sugar substitute in cooking and is water soluble so can also be used to sweeten drinks.
