Newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes

Hey!! I've been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few month. The doctor has advised me to control my diet and workout daily.
I'm concerned about my health. What is the success rate of root canal treatment for diabetes patient? I'm planning to undergo root canal therapy from a clinic in Toronto. The left side of my face is slightly swollen and it's bothering me. I don't know if home remedies can be of any help. Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks!!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I think you should mention your diabetes to the clinic as then may want to test your blood sugar levels before and after the work. From what I've seen in the UK it is that healthcare professionals prefer not to undertake operations on patients when glucose levels are very high or there is a risk of hypoglycemia during a procedure, so i'm sure this clinic will have a protocol for dealing with patients with diabetes so you should ask them. But if yours is well controlled then I would have thought your condition should't be a major issue.

Thanks for the reply!! My blood sugar level is quite normal and I think I can undergo the procedure. It took some time to maintain my blood sugar level. I hope there won't be any other risks.
 
Welcome to the forum. As a long term diabetic, I advise caution where teeth are concerned. The root canal therapy should be no problem, but observe high degree oral care. Gums and teeth are very susceptible to infection caused by excessive glucose levels. I don't mean to scare you, but take care. I wish you well.
 
I have had successful root canal treatment both before and after T2 diagnosis. Being T2 made no difference to the treatment or outcome, but like you I was diet controlled and my BGs were normal. There can be problems a few years afterwards with the tooth becoming brittle, so sometimes a crown is sensible to protect the tooth. Also there is a slight chance that the problem could reoccur even with the nerve having been successfully taken out, but again that's a few years down the line. I had this happen with one of my back teeth and eventually had it taken out as I couldn't bear the pain any longer. The others have been fine though.

Good luck with the procedure, there's nothing worse than raging toothache so it's important to get it sorted
