Hi, I was diagnosed last night as a type 2 suffer, my question that hopefully you guys can help me with is do you recieve tablets free on prescription and can you buy your own glucose meter and where is it best to buy one from?

I am off to the docs shortly to collect the free meter and prescription and hopefully more info on what I can do to keep the levels down as they rushed me into the hospital early evening yesterday as my fasting sugar level was 20 and then they checked again at the hospital and it was 20.5.
The consultant at the Milton Keynes unit was very good in explaining certain things, but as you can imagine taking in so much info when you have been told you are a type 2 can blur the brain a little.

Hi laserlout, yes your prescriptions are free, i believe you have to apply for an exemption certificate, your doctor / diabetic nurse will probably be able to give you more information, blood glucose meters can be bought from many chemists or online but i would try getting a freebie from one of the meter companies, give their customer service line a ring and chances are you'll get a free meter sent. Accuchek Aviva or Nano's are popular as are the Abbot freestyle. Personally i went with the accuchek as i prefered their finger pricker.
 
Hi Craig.... I too live in MK. Got the bad news nearly a year ago... thanks to this forum I am still around. Less thanks to the local NHS. I'd advise you to consider everything you are told very carefully and then read/post here about it. Most important is your diet. My DN et al were not a lot of help. It's all very confusing.

As my first quack said one of the few advantages of DM is getting free prescriptions! I bought my own meter from Boots but now my 'new' GP is still tolerant of renewing my strips presc. I have an AccuChek compact plus but it's the only one I have tried. Neat coz the pricker is built in.

Just got back from the docs and have walked away with

OneTouch Vita machine with Onetouch Lancing device
Had a prescription for the Metformin tablets 500mg x 56
Then another prescription for two sharps bins, 200 needles and 50 test strips.

Nice to know my level has dropped from 20.5 last night to 16 at lunchtime though.
 
Careful with that kind of boasting about ill gotten gains ( ) around this forum mate! You'll have lots of folks jealous and wanting to move to MK.
Icing on the cake... oops, sorry... getting a lower reading at home then... was that after the celebratory beer and pizza lunch? 8)
