A quick question on nightime (i.e asleep) bg levels , if people tested themselves or you are testing someone else at what level would you wake them to give fast acting drink/food etc ?

Would you assume all OK if above 4 or would you wake even if above 4 but say below 5 just in case

Just wanted to know as my daughter was 4.1 at 2.30am and could not decide what to do

also if you decide to wake them would you give fast acting and then keep them awake until bg increases to then give long acting carb or just go with the quick acting and go back to bed .....

At 4.1 I would have woken them up to air on the safe side..

As to what level you automatically wake her is difficult to say, as it would depend on several factors mainly how much over night she falls, and whether this is based on the blood glucose falls between going to bed and her lowest ebb which would be anywhere between 2-3am, then increases slightly by the time she got up..

If you can work this out, then it will give a better guide for you..

Not sure if you do the 2.30am one every night or not, but what you can do is on different nights is do another BG at an hour apart, so tonght you do 2.30 and 3.30, then tomorrow you do 2.30 and 4.30 etc you can leave a night or two out or go the whole hog and have a sleepless night testing every hour this build a picture of what is happening to her blood sugar levels overnight...

I have a little advantage that Khaleb is still on a bottle so if he is a bit low in the night I can give him either plain milk or lace it with glucose powder and not even wake him up. At 4.1 I'd just give him the milk but anything 3's I'd put a little powder in the bottle. I would even be giving Khaleb something if he was 6mml at 2.30am. Of occassion I have even giving him something if he was higher because I've had him do some massive drops through the early hours of the morning if he has had a really energetic day. The only time his bsl goes up after 2am is if he is sick. How old is your child?

It gets too exhausting to keep getting up checking so if I'm not sure I give him something and go back to sleep. I went through a stage of getting up every couple of hours but now I usually get up once and occassionally (after a series of stable nights) I'll not check him at all. I pretty well wake up every night now though anyway.

I also base some of those night time decisions on what and when he had supper.
