Night time Urination

Hello. I have been type 2 for 18 years, and my treatments now include Insulin and Medication combined. After going to bed at night I regularly have to get up to urinate on average 2/3 times a night. Do forum members think this is normal or abnormal ? Of course, I would love it to be less frequent so that I could sleep better at night. Just wondered what others think. Thanks.
 
If I go through the night without getting up at least once it's a red letter day (night)
 
For me it is normal. Always once, usually twice. It doesn't affect me as I don't turn any lights on and return to bed and back to sleep in seconds.
 
It's not abnormal, but how are your blood sugars at night? If they're on the high side that could be the cause.
 
I think it's just something we get used to as we get older. I never used to have to get up when I was a young woman but now, in my early 60's I get up at least once, and probably twice if I've been really thirsty during the evening.

My husband is 70 and he's up twice most nights. His T2 is in remission.
 
 
I want to suggest you get in touch with your HCP in order not to take anything for granted. Like its often said on this
Forum that we cannot give clinical opinion. We only share experiences.

If your male, ask your Gp for a prostrate blood test.

It depends on so many factors but if it’s unusual for you then you need to see your doc.
I’ve never got up to wee in the night, even through pregnancies and I think that’s quite unusual.
 
I get up a couple of times to urinate during the night, I have been doing this for more years than I can remember but it dates back to when I did shift work.

I can recommend a good book to read about it "Micturate At Night by I.P. Freely".

Welcome to the forum.

I'm a guy headbutting 51 in a number of weeks. Unless my BGs are insane during the night, I may wake once in a while.
Apart from that. Even with alcahol consuption. The "call" does not disturb my sleep.

Get toma doctor & get checked out. It may just be your personal rythm. But better to see a doc for peace of mind.

I have a regular appointment with my specialist "Diabetes Nurse" at the end of this month, so thanks to you I have a lot more questions to ask her this time. For clarification, I am a 71 year old male, BMI is 30, fasting blood glucose last time was 60 (don't know why my reading is on a different scale to others, my clinic changed this about 3 years ago, they want me to get down to 48). Thanks again.

Thanks for your very relevant advice, I am male. Have had the "PSA" blood test performed twice in the last 10 years, last time was about 4 years ago and always normal. However, as I am 71 I will request my Diabetes Nurse to authorise a new PSA blood test. Thanks again.

This isn't a fasting blood glucose reading. It is your HbA1c. The fasting blood glucose test is a snapshot of what your level was at the exact time of the test. The HbA1c is a sort of average of the blood glucose over the previous 2 to 3 months. They have different measurement units.
 

Thanks for your clarification. I guess my mind got confused, as I have just a couple of days ago had to "fast" overnight to have some blood tests done. One of the blood tests was the HbA1c, and another was a fasting blood glucose reading. These were performed in preparation for an appointment with my Diabetes Nurse, later this month. Thanks again.
