Non Fasting Blood Tests

My GP Practice have introduced a one stop shop with a practice nurse to replace my annual check up with my GP. Attending today I was suprised to be asked to give blood for tests to monitor how I am controlling my blood sugar and cholestrol levels and when I asked if they should not be fasting tests I was told that things had improved and it was no longer necessary to fast. I can find no refference to this and I am concerned this is all a cost saving exersise ?

If the blood is, as I expect, an HbA1c test then there is no need to fast at all. It measures the effect of your BGs over the last 3 months, heavily weighted to the last month. Regarding cholesterol, a lot of evidence also suggests there is no need to fast for that either unless, I believe, it's very high. Then you'd be asked back for fasting lipid tests. So relax, for once it's not cost cutting!
