Alcohol puts weight on me like no tomorrow as well.
I went on a portion controlled, very low fat, calorie counting diet, sadly no booze. I got rid of all the "classic" bad carbs, potatoes, pasta, rice etc. Ate a very healthy, fresh foods, lots of veg. I lost 4 stone, and have got my bs down to a non diabetic level.
The thing you need to do it test after any type of food, and you'll know what you can and can't eat.
Eat to your meter, find which foods spike you, then take it from there.
