Novo Faster Aspart approved in Europe

You may have missed it in the news on Tuesday, but the first step forward in faster insulins has arrived. Novo received approval for their FiAsp (Faster Aspart) product, or what I like to call NovoVeryRapid. It should be available to us some time in the first half of this year.

I look forward to finding out whether it's really faster....

Well it's about time. I know they were doing trials at my hospital clinic. Kind of hoping I can give this a try since I think it will help with the massive lag I see at lunchtime.

Yes, I've already emailed my DSN to try and get it as soon as it's available. Looks like the Lilly product, BCLispro is still awaiting Phase III trials which Lilly has to agree to. I dont' expect to see that getting approval until late 2017 at best.
 
This is (hopefully) fantastic news!

I really hope it is faster by a decent margin, if so it stands to markedly improve the quality of my work days as it's often quite hard to get all the way down to the office for my lunch bolus then have to traipse all the way back to the lab then all the way back to the office 20 minutes later (they're at opposite ends of a HUGE building) . Even if it kicked in just 10-15 minutes quicker I could probably stay in the office for the whole of my lunch break instead of having to take it in two chunks.

Quicker corrections would be nice also so I don't spend an over an hour glaring furiously at the Librelink app waiting for the **** arrow to change!

I kind of get the feeling your average DSN or GP won't be "clued up" on this Fiasp.?
Then there is the "budget"? This stuff will have a higher price tag to NR..
Some of us may have to be prepared to be fobbed off by the professionals?
It's not like we have to manage this condition on a daily basis like the "experts" do in 5 minute chunks 9 to5.. (Meant sardonically.)
 
All we know is H1 2017 at the moment @alhubb

I spoke to my DSN and asked to get put on it when it becomes available so I could give them feedback about how it really works...

That's cool for a pumping regime such as youself.
But won't there be different bolus "timing" stuff accountable with us MDIers?

Actually?! Thinking about this.. Wouldn't it affect one's trained approach using a PDM as a pumper?
Just off the top of my head. (Depending on the Fiasp working profile.) I'm thinking possible "split bolusing" for a standard meal in some cases? (Depending on carb & protein content.)

As we all know. This stuff is created in a lab & tested on "controls". We're all forged differently in our own environments...
 
Oh quite, but I'm planning on using it in an OpenAPS set up with an ability to adjust insulin action time and also with an algorithm that can react to food. In that context it should be very interesting.
 

There's no way I'm getting fobbed off on this one. I will simply nag and nag and nag until someone cracks....and it won't be me

I reckon the sensible thing to do is to just experiment with a few reasonably low-carb dishes you're familiar with first so the bolus will be fairly small and it's easy to treat any hypos.

Inject just before or 5 mins prior eating and then see how it goes. I'll just move the pre-bolus back 5 mins every time until it works.

I have absolutely zero qualms about being my clinic's Guinea pig with this and will certainly be trying Tim's very diplomatic approach first...if that fails, let the nagging begin!!
 

I'm a patient guy.. I'd sooner hang back & see what issues with Fiasp surface on here first regarding low carbing MDIers like me..
You know? Get some reviews. We don't always quite get what we hoped for... But I'm sure the "share holders" for Novo Nordisk will!
 
My consultant told me this was coming last August (OCDEM - oxford) and suggested I should look forward to it as I have every hallmark of needing it. I find insulin's lose their potency after being on them a couple of years but previously no one believed me
 
I know my clinic has already been doing trials with Fiasp in pump users, got a review in a few weeks so may see if I can get more information from them on how that one went.
I would have thought that Tim is probably correct in terms of just adjusting what active times are though in OpenAPS I suspect that will be easier to do than most pumps. I could of course be hopelessly wrong since I don't pump
