Hi everyone!

Looking for a little advice for my dad who has type 2 diabetes. He used to inject novorapid 3 times daily and lantus each evening. His blood sugars were good, a little low if anything and he felt reasonably well, though his apetite was definately affected and his sense of taste. Recently his specialist suggested changing to novomix30 twice daily, unfortunately since this change he has felt almost constantly nauseous, and his appetite has all but disappeared.

However, the specialist insists that the change in insulin is not to blame. My dad has been like this for weeks now, and I'm really concerned for him. Has anyone out there had similar symptoms when taking this form of insulin, or is it just a coincidence that these sypmtoms appeared when his medication was changed? Any help would be really appreciated

why on earth would he be better off on that stuff? Sorry, bite my tonge!!

Unless your dad is a person who is very much stuck in a routine and doesn't do much excersise, then mixtard is 30 is no good. On mixtard (which im assuming is the same as novomix30) you end up feeding your diabetes, having to snack between meals to cover the peaks falls of the mixtard insulin action profile.

With his MDI (multiple daily injections) he will have so much more flexibility in what he can eat and when we can eat it, if he wants to skip a meal he can, if he wants to have an extra snack, he can.

so based on that alone i would be arguing the case that he should go back on MDI and not mixtard.

Of course that's my personal opinion, i dont know what his routines are or life style is like. But from personal experience i hated being on mixtard and if it was suggested to be to go back to it they'd have to be up for a fight lol.

Many thanks for your reply, it feels good to hear from someone who has been there, done that etc! I don't know if novomix 30 and mixtard are the same types of insulin, but I certainly intend to find out. My dads specialist is resisting changing him back to his old regime, even talking of admitting him to hospital to carry out tests, so convinced is he that this nausea problem is not caused by the novomix30, but I think it is just too much of a coincidence.

I guess we'll just have to stand up to this guy and insist that we go back on the old regime and see if there is any improvement.

I think you need to get a second opinion on this, I think you have a strong enough reason to get one. I would not go back on mixtard if you paid me, it was just pointless and I was always all over the place with it. MDI is the better way as like Stuboy said you get so much more flexibility.

Thanks for you reply I think you are dead right, a second opinion is exactly what we need, I can't beleive how dismissive this specialist is, especially as it is clear that different insulin affects people in different ways.

I am on Novomix 30 and no other medication. Have to say,i've never experienced any nausea myself and I would not say I noticed a change in my appetite at all. (Well,not until very recently when I cut down on carbs.)
I have good readings now (again since cutting the carbs. down)BUT sometimes it's tricky getting dosage right and so many folks have said that I'd find it easier on a basal and bolus set up.
 
yeah, like chocaholic i too have had no problems with novomix 30. If anything it has transformd my diabetes levels from all over the place to stable readings. Having said this i've only been diagnosed since mid-feb and have not had any other type of insulin to try.

thanks chocoholic and hazey for your replies concerning novomix30. I'm pleased that you both seem to be using a treatment which is working for you. Maybe the insulin is not causing the problem for my dad, but over the last fewmonths we have eliminated so many other medications which have been suggested as a possible cause, novamix30 is all that's left.

As I look into this further I am wondering whether dad might have a milder form of diabetic gastroparesis, he is rarely sick, but has retching bouts, and can eat only a small amount of food before feeling full, and of course if he could get away without eating at all he would! Not an option. Thanks to you both for your input,
