Ode to an hba1c test
It comes, my looming date with destiny:
It’s time to test my hba1c.
The judgement of my annual review
When doctors find out what I REALLY do.
My fasting levels may have been OK,
But what of the remainder of the day?
The daily struggles that I undergo
Reduced unto a number, that can show
If I have kept my BG levels stable
(Or I can blame a faulty GI table).
The blood test shows in silent accusation
The times when I have yielded to temptation.
My test, my nemesis, take thou my blood,
And if through thee my name is turned to mud,
Yet still resolve is stirring in my breast,
That one day I will rank among the best.
One day I’ll read the news from heaven sent,
That I have joined the club of 5 per cent.
If I should die, think only this of me:
I once had a good hba1c.
