OGT results

In May 2012 I had a fasting score of 7.0 and so my GP had an Oral Glucose Tolerance test done in June 2012. The results of that OGT were fasting score 6.4 while the 2hr test score was 8.7. I was told I had impaired glucose tolerance. I was 65 years old and not overweight with no family history of diabetes. I was advised to change my diet and in July 2012 my HBA1C score was 44 and I was told I had my Pre Diabetes under control.

In June this year I had fasting blood tests done to see how I had got on after 1 year. My Fasting score was 6.2 and my HBA1C test score was 42. My cholesteral level had dropped from 4.7 to 3.4 after having been put on a single statin tablet. This sounded like good results to me however my GP wanted me to have another Oral Glucose test done and I was asked to see the diabetic nurse who would explain the results to me. She told me the results of this oral glucose test were 6.2 for my fasting test and 4.9 for the 2 hour test, She said I was doing well but my GP wanted my fasting score of 6.2 to be less than 6.

Since having checked online for OGT results I am confused and the fasting score before the OGT of 6.2 indicates I am pre diabetic while the 2 hour test score of 4.9 seems to indicate I am not Pre diabetic. Should my 2 hour test score been with in the range 7.9 to 11.0 if I am Pre diabetic?

You've done really well to lower your levels and certainly going in the right direction but your doctor is right that both your fasting level and Hba1c are still higher than they would ideally be. It's worth keeping aware of your levels.

A fasting glucose of 6.2 is considered to be impaired fasting glucose and this like impaired glucose tolerance* is a risk factor for diabetes. You might like to read this wiki article which explains it: (and it's worth noting that whilst below 6.2mmol/l is considered OK in the UK, the US have adopted a lower figure of 5.6mmol/l.

*ie if your level had been higher at the end of the glucose challenge.

The UK guidelines also say that people with an HbA1c of 42-47mmol/mol are in the bracket that needs monitoring.
