I was diagnosed in 1974 and starting on an Omnipod on Monday! Any tips?

Hi @jill17

A few tips, don't come away from the clinic until your confident you can use the pump, the instruction manual for the Omnipod Pump is very good and self-explanatory and their customer care-line is very good too, but if you have any issues next week get in touch with your DSN and discuss, plus if you get the opportunity do try and attend the pump training days that are sometimes offered by the Omnipod Pump reps.

Going to tag @himtoo @catapillar into your thread as they are Omnipod users too. Good luck and hope all goes well

the omnipod rep will spend as long as you need setting you up and answering any questions. Their care line is good for any queries on techy stuff. The user manual is good (well it's not a thrilling read, but it's user friendly) do have a flick through it.

Get yourself a copy of pumping insulin - it will help you get to grips with your pump.

Take a big bag to the appointment to bring all your goodies home! Don't take your basal Monday morning.

Make sure your DSN does a letter to get your repeat prescription updated- vials of insulin, freestyle lite strips and a blood ketone monitor and strips.

Get some tape off spray (or some adhesive dissolver) because those pods get well stuck down!

Be prepared to have a little cry with relief about 10 days in when you realise how long it's been since you have done an injection (maybe that's just me - but I'm not even a crier and I'm not bothered by injections!)

I love my pod. Good luck

Hi @jill17
fab news for you getting your omnipod !!

be prepared for it not all to work like perfection right from the start.
between you and your DSN and the rep , all your settings will get loaded into the pump ( but these are a starting point) Your DSN will err on the side of caution -- that is why speaking with her very regularly the first few weeks is crucial.

I would keep a written "log" of everything -- hourly basal rates , Insulin to carb ratios , food intake , correction doses etc.
these are really handy for reviewing progress and seeing any patterns -- to make adjustments.

The main thing though --- is be kind to yourself -- it is really weird not giving injections at first , and you are sort of starting over from a knowledge point of view.
you will gain experience quickly , but expect a good 6 - 8 weeks to get everything right.

keep posting here with any queries or message me if you want too

all the best !

ps -- here is a copy of the "log" i Use

Remember that you won't need a massive amount of sweet things to correct a low on the Omnipod or any pump otherwise you'll swing upwards sugarwise, it's quite different to MDI in that respect.

To start with its quite easy to forget you have a device attached and knock it off quite often but after a while you do seem to adapt and remember, this applies to the Libre as well. I've been using the Omnipod for nearly 5 years and the Libre for 2 so this does come from experience, feel free to ask anything, there is a learning curve! In terms of placement it's good to have a routine so the skin gets a rest. I work up one side then down the back then move to the other side, this means I get 2 months before using the same place again.

Thanks for all your advice. On day 6 now getting to grips with my Omnipod.
