Over the counter medications

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a week ago, I will be getting a flu jab soon but I was wondering if there are any restrictionss to taking over the conteter medication for colds headaches tec. Or any that people take without any problems. Often says onthe packet check with GP .....but then GP not always availbale to ask
 
watch some of the cough syrups some are heavy on the sugar but the odd spoonful wont hurt
 
If in doubt then have a word with the pharmacist who are usually very helpful.
 
Also use your meter to test the impact on your blood sugars. I have a terrible cold at the moment and was wary of taking decongestants etc. as I heard they can raise blood sugars. Gave in yesterday and took some sudafed. Very small impact - up by 0.5 mmols, which is fine by me.

Edited to change “sugared” to sudafed and make it clear that I was talking about a rise of 0.5mmols, not a hypo!

Avoid cough mixtures, though in saying that, I never use cough mixture for a cough as have found it never helps.
When I get a cold, I take the flu/cold capsules rather then the sachets that make into a drink because of added sugar
 
I found some strawberry flavoured sugar free Strepsils in Waitrose today. £5 per packet whereas the 'sugar variety' was only £3.

My GP said nasal sprays are fine for to use for congestion - I can't take decongestants due to bp medication.
 
A cough mixture without sugar is Vogel ivy thyme or bronchaforce

Just paracetamol or sugar free strepcils

I have just more or less recovered from a 3 week virus that was very nasty. The migraine type headache and face aches were unbearable at times so I had to take Paracetamol. My levels went up, but I put that down entirely to the virus, not the Paracetamol. Impossible to distinguish.
 
Thought you'd been a bit quiet. Glad you're on the right road.
