I've just found out hat my Triglycerides are up at 10.2. This is AFTER staying off the booze for 2 months. I was about to try drinking Red Wine with food (just one glass with my evening meal) in an attempt to control my BGs. The doctor said I should absolutely NOT do this as I am at a very high risk of developing Pancreatitis if I do not do something about my Trigs soon...

I was advised (on this site!) that alcohol DOES NOT affect Trig levels. Was that advice correct?

I'm really panicking now. Absolutely sh*ting myself to be honest. I'm (only) 31.

I'm happy to try anything I can to sort this out. That means exercising, A LOT. I'd hoped that alcohol (in moderation, and in Red Wine) was going to be beneficial. Is that the case?
 
Hi Patch,Was this a fasting test result? I have read on several sites when I have researched this that the fasting test is always considerably lower than the non fasting.
Has your Dr.recommended any course of action other than saying "no alcohol?"

Your trig. numbers are very high, but don’t panic yet. It is a well known phenomenon that in the early days of a low carb diet this often happens. The reason is you are burning up a fair rate of body fat and are releasing trigs. into your blood and burning them up as energy. When you have lost the excess weight the trig. numbers usually drop. In most cases, dramatically. A moderate amount of wine does not usually effect trigs. In a big way, If at all. Wine usually brings down BG numbers but all alcohol can raise blood pressure.

Thanks - that's a little reassuring. I'm a little concerned about the lo-carbing this time around. The weight is pretty hard to shift - but my BGs are staying at a constant 6.5 - 7.5, which keeps me on track. I'm finding it increasingly hard to take my own dvice (eat fat to burn fat) because I'm just not hungry!

I wish I could get a straight answer to this question:

Does drinking a single glass of red wine with my evening meal have any effect on my trigs?

I'm happy to stop drinking on a weekend if this helps...

Having a drink doesn't seem to have affected my trigs, I have a few every weekend, I get through a couple of bottles of red a week. My trigs at last test were 0.65, but like they say everyone is different.

It's the (lack of) exercise that's done me in. I've got real lazy lately - something I have to change ASAP.

Hi, im partial to a weekend drink but was wondering what a 'trig ' level actually is?

i take my insulin out with me and if levels are high whilst drinking i give myself correction shots and keep do night time injection at same time as sual (even if im out)
 
Hi Patch,
As a Pancreatitis sufferer since 2004 and waiting for one third of my Pancreas to be cut off I strongly advise you to work with your GP. Believe me, Pancreatitis is an illness you really do not want to suffer from.

Having said that, my Pancreatitis was not due to alcohol and although I stopped drinking in 1974 and have been teatotal since, the Docs tried their best to put it down to alcohol. One even said that it must be a "late reaction" to my drinking days in the army, 30 years later.
 
Patch, have some " Good Carbs " crept into your diet ?? My recent hols threw my numbers wobbly for a while but a firm hand on the tiller is getting things back on track, have you read Sue s first link above.
Wouldnt like to comment on the Red Wine as not a fan..sorry!!

Good news - I've got my Trigs down to 5.3! Still not great, I know - but compared to what they were (10.2) I'm over the moon. This also means I can start to drink Red Wine with my evening meals to try to control my BS a little more. HBA1c is currently 7.0, down from 8.3 two months ago. Total cholesterol is 4.3 - again - not great, but much better. Unfortunately, they couldn't give me a breakdown of HDL/LDL due to my still high Trigs...

I haven't lost any weight, although I am lo-carbing (v. strict!)
