HI there,

I am 49, overweight but generally fit. Non-smoker, very light drinker (1 to 2 units per day). We do not have diabetes in the family, but due to our location we are a very pro-active family in terms of checking our vital signs on a regular basis.

For the last few months, my fasting blood sugar level has been way below 6 first thing in the morning (averaging 5.5). This morning I checked and it is 14.1. At first I thought it was a mistake and checked again and it came back as 13.1. After breakfast (porridge no sugar) it came back as 16.1

Is there any medication that can cause this or am I now one of the millions?

Dont panic :!: There are lots of different reasons why your BGs would be high , you could be starting with an infection even something as simple as a cold can drive the levels up .Maybe something you ate yesterday could have caused it .How long after the porridge did you test? Porridge can cause spikes in some people.I am not medically qualified but I would test before your next meal and then 2 hours after and see if your readings level out .Then maybe do fasting tests in the mornings for a few days to see what the outcome is but dont worry , stress can cause a high BG count .

Hi Landshark and welcome to the forum In the case of being suspicious of having diabetes, you need to go and see your doctor. Only he/she can tell you if you are diabetic and what to do. All sorts of things can put your levels up, and it depends on the person. What medications are you on?

Thanks people,

I am of the mind that a combination of cold/flu which I have as well as the Christmas fare which may be more sweet than I am used to may well have shoved the figures very high. They are coming down slowly at the moment so I will just readjust my diet and see what happens before jumping to any conclusions. That said, if these numbers persist for more than 48 hours, I will hightail it to my local quackologist to see what magic potions are available. Have they stopped using leeches now in medicine? I know they still have them in politics!

Leeches and maggots are back in medical fashion but I dont think they are used in Diabetes just yet
