Hi I've discovered Hovis Wheatgerm Crackers with Peanut Butter on is absolutely beautiful. Still not totally clued up on this "better carbs" situation.

What are peoples opinions of this as a snack?

The peanut butter is fine but how many carbs are in each cracker? Did you test after eating them? That result would give you the answer. Must say it sounds nice
I find a spoonful of peanut butter satifying on it's own. Are you type 1 or 2? Do you have a meter? how often do you test? Tell us more so we can help you

The only way to know if its affecting your BS is to test before you eat the peanut butter and crackers and then 2 hrs after its eaten, the result will soon tell you whether or not your body can tolerate it or not.

Type 2 take 4 metformin a day (2 500mg with breakfast and 2 500mg at teatime) don't test (have no equipment). I know every one is different. 3.6g carb in each cracker. Thought with it being wheatgerm it may be better?

Kev, really the only way you will know for sure is if you get a meter. In theory wheatgerm and brown bread, etc is better, but that is the theory - for many it is far from fact. The Metformin does not bring glucose levels down by much at all, a bit, but it has other uses too so is looked on as a good all rounder. Diet will be your main force in getting this under control but until you get your meter, nobody can possibly know how individual foods will affect you.

Kev try online for an SD Codefree meter and strips so you can test. You may be able to tolerate three crackers with peanut butter as a tasty snack. But there is only one way to be sure.

Wheatgerm sounds an improvement, but nowadays, they muck around with it so much that it is probably counts as 'processed', Also, my Hovis crackers have added sugar to make them sweetmeal rather than wholemeal. Is the carb count total carbs or Net carbs (with insoluble fibre taken out of the equation?) I find baked cheese thins at 1.9 gms per cracker to be ok in small doses, but it is refined flour, so will spike me if I have too many. The carb count for the thins includes 0.5 gms sugar, so net carbs is i.4 gms per cracker.

How about suggestions about what i can spread my peanut butter on without to much worry?

Unless you test, then any suggestion we make could be wrong for you, I see celery sticks mooted, which should be ok. I can add carrot sticks, kale crispies, but then your current crackers could be good as well. Certainly 3.6 carbs per cracker is fairly low, but if you have a target of 20 gms max per day, then it won;t take many to pass the losing post. Have you got a target in mind?

LIDL high protein rolls? Sliced and toasted, or sliced thin and baked in oven until they are crisp as crackers.
