Pear or no pear?

Hello

I've not been eating fruit apart from a few cherries with my Greek yogurt in a morning. Today I tried a pear for lunch with a lump of cheese and a small coffee with cream. Before lunch I was 4.8 , 90 minutes later it was 6.1

Does that mean pears are OK or not?

Thanks

Depends on what your personal targets are. You are well inside the official target of below 8.5 after two hours so that's OK. Some people are quite hard on themselves and set more stringent targets.

Pears look OK to me.

Try one again but test more frequently. The 6.1 could have been the peak, it could have been on the way down, it could have been on the way up. I would be happy with 6.1 at 90 minutes but would have tested again at 2 hours to make sure.

Also the fat in the cheese may have slowed or lowered the peak. Might be worth trying just the pear on its own then do before and 1,2 and 3 hour measurements after to be sure.

Thank you! My targets are really just not to be out of control and bingey. It's given the creeps thinking what I was doing to myself after entire packets of biscuits etc....

Thanks , that was a well timed response! After 2 hrs it's 5.2

I think fruit is so fast spiking that the spike is before 1 hour... so I would say measure fruits effect between 50-60 minutes and not 90 minutes after eating it

Cheers, if I have one I won't eat it alone. It's the general scrumminess with a sharp cheese that appeals!

I think Bulkbiker was advising this just for an experiment. Fruit should never be eaten on its own. It needs fat from cheese, cream or yogurt.

Yes that's exactly what I meant.. to see the effect of the pear you should just try the pear on its own just the once...

Trying fruit on its own can be very scary. I have mentioned this several times in the past because I will never forget how shocked I was. I ate a single plum, on its own. I was wearing a Libre sensor at the time. I shot up to double figures to levels I had never seen before. The rest of the punnet went out for the birds.

I have a lot to learn!

I don't see the point of suggesting this experiment as the OP has found a way to safely eat a pear and suggested that binge eating has been a problem.

@VioletViolet do have diabetes or prediabetes?

I'm in a limbo state really, not officially diagnosed as anything just warned of high sugars and sent away to have a go at a healthy diet and bring levels down before any further steps are taken. I've been in this position MANY times before. A merry go round of eating madness and I'm playing with fire. Yes, binge eating is a huge problem.

I find that apple or pear (in moderate portion size) eaten after a meal is not too bad for my BGL either. It's something that I try not to eat too much of though, so if they're really large pears then I might only have half. I also like to have them while they're still a little bit crisp and not too soft and ripe.

BTW. Pears are one of the better natural sources of the trace mineral chromium, which apparently plays a role in assisting with glucose tolerance. So if you can handle one without spiking your BGL too much then that sounds good to me.
