Pickled newbie here...

Pretty sure he's referred me to some sort of organisation called...umm I can't remember what it's called but it's definitely a mans name!

Thank you Sue thing is if I'm using full fat things more now I don't know how to incorporate that with slimming world and things...
The short answer is that it probably doesn't. I did SW a couple of times, lost loads the first time, put it back on and went back but really struggled, took 6 months to lose a stone, half of which I put back on over Christmas. With hindsite, my bloods were pre-diabetic (but missed by my GP) when I gave it up as a bad job, and put the rest of the stone back on!. Since March when I was told my bloods were a 'bit high' or diabetic as it turned out I've tried counting the calories, and since discovering the site after my eventual diagnosis, have significantly reduced my carbs cutting out pasta, rice and most bread. I've already lost a stone and a half. As a veggie the plan leans towards carbs and fruit, but they aren't good for diabetes. Also low fat yogurts tend to have higher sugar content than full fat varieties. You can have loads of veggies and salads, but filling up on carbs wont help your blood levels. Low carb leans towards using fat to fill the carbs gap. Doesn't have to be 'bad' fat - there is loads of good fats in avocado's, and nuts.

Obviously you need to find the way that works for you, and please don't think I'm trying to tell you what to do as it's entirely your choice which diet you want to follow, but I personally think that it was the wrong thing for me. I know it seems to go against the advice of whats 'healthy' we've heard for years but I wanted to try it if it means I can reduce my levels. Got my 3 months blood tests next week, so I am hoping to see that there has been an improvement. Hope you find what works for you, I'm making this the start of a whole new me. Good luck

Not at all Sue I'm so grateful to hear other people's stories to adapt and try and see what works for me and eek fingers crossed and well done on the weight loss!

hi gem.
it sounds like u doc was as good as mine when I was diagnosed a type1 4yrs ago- considering he was a type 2 himself he didn't take diabetes seriously and it showed. I was however very lucky with lots of good advice. Explanations, n info from a dietician who showed me a book being recommended on this site.
its called " carbs & cals". Its by Chris cheyette & yello balolia. Its very helpful in that it shows pics of meal sizes with the amount of carbs n cals. Also values for drinks n separate foods.
my best advice to u I to read as much as u can. Ask lots of questions n decide what's right for u.
I know it seems hard now, but things do get easier.
do go for the retinal screening. Its worth it. Ad r the yearly site test u should get free as a diabetic. I too have high blood pressure n cholesterol. I've tried several things to improve it n some have helped. Some haven't.
u will find u own way in time.

Welcome @Planetarygo

Fellow vegetarian here & successfully doing the low carb diet. I suggest you have a good look at the 'what have you eaten today' & 'low carb recipe' threads in the Low Carb Diet forum - you'll get a good idea of the sorts of things people are eating. There is also a vegetarian low carb recipe index which might be helpful.

It would be a good idea to get a printout of your results including the breakdown of your cholesterol from the Doctor's surgery - plenty of people here with knowledge of cholesterol issues & plenty who've reduced their weight, cholesterol & their blood sugar doing low carb.

Once again, welcome aboard

Welcome to the forum. Try not to worry too much you are in the right place. I understand how you are worried about taking too long to get it under control but you will be fine. At diagnosis my fasting blood test was 16.9 and it took me 11 months to get it down to 5. I know it is hard trying to figure it out, you think you are on the right track and then it all goes out the window. It happened to me about 10 times. Im finally happy doing the LCHF diet but everyone is different.

Hi planetarygo. When I was diagnosed i asked my DN what my readings were for my blood sugar , hbc1a was , measure your weight , ask about your cholesterol levels too , then you can work out the best course of action to reduce all these .

Thank you all for the welcomes and much needed advice! I'm going to see the doctor this week ask him have a little look and see what he thinks is there anyone who has side effects from all these tablets?

Hi in the beginning felt dizzy and sleeping, But since doing the diet, I have not taken any medication, just control by diet only

Hi Gem

I had a bit of heart pain back in Feb, now diagnosed T2, hypertension and fasting lipid was 6.9. Now on Ramipril for the hypertension and Metformin for the T2 but resisting statins pro temps

My advice is this. You have 2 choices. Let it rule you, or you can rule it. I have adjusted my diet and keep a religious food diary. Lost around a pound a week since diagnosis.

I'm in charge here!
