i've been diabetic for almost 4 years, have very good sugar control. my partner & i are planning on trying for a baby but i dont know whether to tell my diabetes nurse before we start trying or wait until im actually pregnant?! Currently on novorapid & levemir, ramipril for high b.p & atorvastatin to keep cholesterol level

Re: planning a pregnancy, unsure what to do

You really need to talk to your DN and Dr before you get pregnant. Planning is going to involve your medical team also and you may have to adjust your medication. As you already have high blood pressure that will need to be watched very closely as this can raise to dangerous levels during pregnancy.

Cross your 'T's' and dot your 'I's' before you start.

thankyou jenny, was unsure what to do as i dont know any other diabetics. will definately speak 2 them at my next visit in april

Hi Kimberley,
Some analogue insulins not tested safe in pregnancy, Lantus is one of them but I'm not sure about Levemir. I was on Novorapid when I became pregnant a few years ago, I was taken off it as my doc told me it wasn't tested safe and changed me to Humalog.
Type-1s are very carefully monitored in pregnancy , so you and your baby be well looked after. I've had 3 children, and can't fault the antenatal care I recieved, it was very reassuring.
Best of luck

thanks jus, i've heard a few people say that they've been took off novorapid so i assume the same will happen to me. do you know if they change your insulin if its unsuitable before you try for your baby or once you are pregnant?

Hi again,
I was already pregnant, early stages, when I was taken off Novorapid, but then it's very similar to Humalog and I never had any probs with either. If your long-acting were to be changed, and I would if I were you; that is a different matter. A new basal regime can take time to adjust to and you would be better to change before getting pregnant for that reason.
You will probably be referred to a specialist who deals specifically with diabetes and pregnancy, and they will advise you further.

i have a diabetic appointment in april so will discuss further with consultant. would prefer 2 switch to humalog if its similar to novorapid, thankyou very much for taking the time to reply to me really makes a difference to hear from someone who has actually experienced it rather than doctors telling you what they think you should do!
