planning a pregnancy & need advice!

been diabetic almost 4yrs, planning on starting a family with my partner. have very good control of my sugar levels. unsure whether 2 tell diabetes consultant now or wait until im pregnant? currently on novorapid & levemir, also take ramipril for high blood pressure & atorvastatin to keep cholesterol down

You don't say what advice you wanted? If it's about the conception, I used to be pretty good.

I'd ask the consultant about it and arrange a talk with the specialist midwife.
My non-diabetic daughter is expecting her second baby and both pregnancies have had complications. she's found the midwives to be the most helpful people.

I've been diabetic for 23years and I've informed my DN of wanting to try for a baby, a year later i've still not been givin the go ahead. I've been on an insulin pump for a year an a half taking only apidra insulin and still have an HBA1c of 8%,I have been off my contracteptive pill for over a year and not got pregnant :? I am finding this so fustrating, is anyone else having these problems?
 
hi weefredd, i'm not trying for a baby yet,going to notify my diabetic nurse & consulatant at my next appointment in april. however, my non-diabetic friend has been trying for a baby for over a year & has had no joy. Her doctor recently told her that its due to the length of time she was on the contraceptive pill, it can take over a year to get out your system
 
Thanks, I have problems with taking the pill my Dr told me that cerezzette is the only pill you can take being diabetic as it is POP but I dont know if this is 100% true as I cannot take it as I have a lot of side affects with it, its like a visious circle. You dont get any advice on contraception from the diabetic nurses or Dr's. Is anyone taking something different?
 
the pill i'm on is called microgynon wee fredd, i've never been told that there r only certain ones that diabetics can take but i'm on a different one from you & havent had any problems with it
 
Really..I was on yasmin but was taken off it but I think il go back to my Dr as im not taking anything at the minute, as much as I would love to get pregnant I don't want any more complications with my diabetes as im only 25. I've only just found this forum and think its great everyone at the clinic I go to are 60's & 70's I can't really discuss pregnancy etc with them as nice as they all are

Just a tiny question lurking - how do you know that we too are not all in our 60s and 70s too? :roll:

Many who are over 60 years old have a wealth of experience and are considered to be experts. 8)

The older you get the more you realise that age is no barrier to anything and the only thing that may be different would be that the joints creak a little more! You don't get your brain removed when you hit the big 60 as far as I am aware! :lol:
 
That wasn't being disrespectful of older people but I just wouldn't feel comfortable discussing this with them in the middle of the hospital as most of them are there every 6 months, Im there every 3months. I dont mind doing it on here, I just feel akward its like talking to my mum about getting pregnant I just dont feel comfortable talking face to face to someone older than me about it...on here its totally fine
 
yeah i think it would be worth while going back to your doctor, the pill i'm on has worked gr8 for me, i've never had any problem with it. i'll be coming off my pill in the next few months as we're going to try for a baby, i'm lucky to have good control & good hba1c despite going undiagnosed for over a year
 
I have awful mood swings, weight gain and chest pains on the pill im on, I had stopped taking it for a while and went back onto it but since i went back onto it, i turned into a monster lol. I was the 1st person to go on a pump in my clinic so im the guiney pig and its really learning with the nurses, so im hopefully going to get the go ahead soon to start trying, I find it so fustrating that I have to wait for a Dr to say yes you can have a baby now, I'm waiting near a year on that to come :roll: Im going to get my pump rates changed tomorrow at a new clinic being set up so hopefully something good will come out of it. I just think my complications could get worse before I even get the chance to have a baby.
 
that must be horrible weefredd, i know some people experience things like that with the pill, could you not try the contraceptive jag or the implant to see how they affect you? i'm feeling quite anxious about telling my consulatant & DN that i want to try for a baby, just incase they say 'no' as i've had high b.p readings at the hospital but its only because i get anxious about going as i have to travel quite far & i dont like travelling alone but they didnt listen to me & started me on ramipril for it. i know high b.p during pregnancy can cause pre-eclampsia :roll:
 

Forgive the small tease! I remember very well how desperately shy I was once upon a time but rest assured that you will lose it after the first baby!

I am so glad that my daughter-in-law felt able to talk freely with me about all these kind of things as it has really drawn us all so close. I love her to bits and she has given me three lovely grandsons. I was very blessed that my mum was brilliant as was my mum-in-law and both helped so much. The main thing to remember is that you are not going to be doing anything that they haven't already done which is why you and your oh are here. :wink: You can use this part of your life to grow wonderful relationships as everyone gets very excited about babies and you gain such understanding of each other. 8)

We are kind of in the same boat- we want to have another baby soon- in fact that's what led to my diagnosis (pre conception blood tests as i was feeling rather run down)

You def need to at the very least speak to your GP- i believe that diabetics nshould take a high dose prescription only folic acid. My GP has been great helping me plan pre-conception care.

Just want to clarify something for you here. You do not have to wait for your doctor to tell you when you can have a baby. The HCPs involved in your care can offer you advice and their opinion and aid you in making decisions that affect your health. The decision about having a baby is entirely yours.

Thanks for all your replys I was at my pump clinic and I was told my sugars were going in the right direction and they would do my HBA1c next time I am at the clinic and then 6weeks from that we can start trying for a baby, i feel like I need to wait for my Dr's go ahead as I have complications and dont want to make them worse but my Diabetic Dr is very nice and knows I am very keen to start a family and is now letting me e-mail my BM results to her every week so I came out of our meeting with a positive mind about it I have only spoke to 1 girl about pregnancy and she has had a lot of complications as a result of the pregnancy which scares me a little!!
