I got a call from my old Endo, a wonderful man who helped me with some thyroid drama I had some years ago. He runs one of the biggest and most respected adult diabetes centers in South Africa and is considered top of his field south of the Equator. He heard about Max's T1 diagnosis from my sister who is a patient of his.

This is what he said. Thank God you live now and not twenty years ago. We Endo's are confident that in the next 10 to 15 years, 15 years at the absolute outside, T1 will be 100% cured either by way of vaccine or by way of reversal. Please don't think your boy is going to have to battle this his whole life through.

I nearly fell over.

His advice was to live in the moment, keep doing what we are doing (and gave a two thumbs up for our tight control) and to be positive about the future.

Not quite sure why I am posting this, I suppose as parents we always hold out for that miracle, and this phone call of reassurance from an incredibly busy specialist (his next available appointment is in September), speaks volumes...

Thanks for posting Philly It's very encouraging. I think the same and its this that gets me through. I'm always looking up the progress of research and technologies and I think we're in a good time. Even before a cure we'll have better resources for management. I spoke to the artificial pancreas team who are in the midst of trials in the home and they reckon 5-10 years

Pressed send before I meant to! And also there are lots of companies trying out non invasive glucose monitoring, so technologies are hopefully on the horizon. And a cure in our kids time is a wonderful hope x

That really is encouraging news and I believe in my heart that the Endo may be right
